ABBYSATTIC's SparkPeople Blog ABBYSATTIC's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community If only I could be my 18-year old (sometimes) Yesterday was a banner day for my daughter. She's in college 700 miles away from home and admitedly the first week wasn't the best. A lot of loneliness, difficulty finding people she really wants to be friends with.

She really wanted to audition for the dance team. She had been dancing since she could walk, but stopped in HS to pursue other interests. Still, she always considered herself a dancer. The audition time was changed a couple of times and ended up at a time when she ... Fri, 3 Sep 2010 09:30:47 EST Time to get back on track So the last couple of weeks have been difficult. First I went on a cruise and then travelled 700 miles to take my oldest to college. We ended up being away from home almost two straight weeks.

The first week I did fairly well. I ate well and exercised. Took spinning classes for the first time. And when I didn't exercise, I walked. I kept to the stairs and avoided the elevators.

Week 2 was a bit more difficult. First we had a 12 hour drive in a vehicle which was pa... Mon, 23 Aug 2010 12:15:41 EST Vacationing with Sparkpeople Last week my family and I sailed to Bermuda for a week's vacation before my oldest is off to college. Prior to leaving I really worried about how I would manage to come home and not have gained any weight. I'm writing today to report all I did.

First of all, I made myself a promise I would not take the elevators on the ship unless I was dealing with luggage. My husband told me he would be good for 3 floors but no more. We agreed he would take the elevator when necessary without... Mon, 16 Aug 2010 12:23:53 EST What a Disappointment Shortly after joining Sparkpeople I started the Couch to 5K program. This was my second time as I completed it 3 years ago. The problem was once the weather turned, I was no longer interested in running outside and I don't have a treadmill.

But, I decided to give it another try. It's so amazing how you really can run for some distance after a few weeks when the first week you're huffing and puffing after 60 seconds.

However, I must of landed wrong because by the begin... Mon, 26 Jul 2010 22:38:42 EST The Proper Way to Weigh Yourself, Part 2 For those of you who read/commented on my blog from Saturday, I thought I'd follow up.

Wednesday is my official weigh-in day. My daughter woke me up at 5:00 am saying she had been up all night, just couldn't sleep. I started to just lounge in bed for a bit and then remembered it was Wednesday. Might as well get up and see what the scale has to say this morning.

Wow. 135.5 lbs. Was I thrilled.

Now, I should mention that when I got on the scale, I was very ... Wed, 21 Jul 2010 08:59:05 EST Vacationing My oldest goes off to college in mid-August. It's a 12-hour drive from our house. So between the drive, orientation and getting her settled, we'll be gone a week. Exercise, other than a lot of walking would probably go by the wayside, but did I mention a lot of walking so I'm not worried. I've learned a lot about eating so I think I'll be ok in that regard, too.

Then, we decided to sneak in a vacation before we go. I'm so excited. We're cruising to Bermuda, all 4 of us. But ... Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:22:35 EST The Proper Way to Weigh Yourself So this is my question for the day. Is there a proper way to get on a scale? I ask this because I can get on and off my scale three or more times in succession and each time see a different reading. And the variation may be as much as a pound so it makes a difference.

I mentioned my dilemma to my husband and he responded by asking how I was standing on the scale. His thought was that your weight is in your heels, not your toes and therefore when I get on the scale, my heels sho... Sat, 17 Jul 2010 16:09:20 EST Weekly Weigh In I started to write this last night, but I had sloppy fingers and lost my post. Starting over...

I weigh in on Wednesday mornings. I consciencously avoid the scale the rest of the week because daily fluctuations can be so frustrating. Well, weekly ones can, too.

I was really looking forward to that weigh in. While I had to curtail my exercise routine because of an injury, I've been eating right and finally felt like my hard word these last 6 weeks was paying off. The... Thu, 15 Jul 2010 09:02:50 EST Wow, was I caught off guard (or maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought) I know I eat out more than I should, but I'm usually very careful about what I order. I ask for my meal to be prepared without butter, oil, sauces, etc. More often than not, I order a dinner-size salad with chicken on it, dressing on the side. I use very little of the salad dressing. Let's just say if the little cup they bring the dressing in is a 2 tablespoon cup, then I use, less than 1/2 teaspoon.

One of my husband's favorite places to go is Bertucci's. When I'm there, I ty... Thu, 8 Jul 2010 09:17:45 EST Disappointed! Wow, was I disappointed when I got on the scale for my weigh-in this morning. 2.5 lbs UP. Yikes. How did that happen? I've upped my workouts and I'm eating as well as I ever have. Oh, I know what happened...

Yesterday was my youngest's 15th birthday. She really wanted to go to a Hibachi Steak House. They use butter like it's water. I know I piled the calories on, but the rest of my week was so good. I knew I would pay for yesterday's dinner, but honestly I expected the sca... Wed, 30 Jun 2010 10:06:33 EST My appetite is increasing The last couple of days I've noticed that my appetite seems to be increasing. I want more food.

Today is day 28 for me since joining Sparkpeople. So far, so good. I'm motivated to eat the right things. I'm motivated to workout. And using the site is fun.

Honestly I haven't been eating my minimum calories. Unless I have a meal out, I rarely make it to the minimums for my size/goals. I know that's not so good. Yesterday I was hungry way before dinner and had a prot... Tue, 29 Jun 2010 13:51:14 EST When's the last time you had a physical? My husband has several medical issues all stemming from being diagnosed with Type I diabetes over 40 years ago. His endocrinologist considers him a model patient because he does everything he's supposed to do to keep his blood sugar where it's supposed to be. He sees his "battery" of physicians on a regular basis and although he's on several maintenance drugs, in addition to being insulin-dependent, we are both confident that everything is being monitored as it should.

My childre... Sun, 27 Jun 2010 22:00:38 EST It's amazing what age does to you. So I've been working my way through C25K with a fair amount of success. By that I mean I'm getting through the workout, but my speed is relatively slow. For example, my week 3 runs are averaging 14 minute miles. Even when I just walk, I find I'm really struggling to walk a 15 minute mile. Honestly, I'm probably walking a 16 minute mile. It's frustrating because I know I used to walk a lot faster. But I'm 52, 53 in the fall, and I guess my body just isn't moving as fast as it used to. Y... Sat, 26 Jun 2010 14:52:49 EST What did we do back then? Some pretty fierce thunderstorms came through the mid-Atlantic yesterday afternoon. You may have heard about the hurricane force winds that tore up Bridgeport, CT. I'm not in CT, but we had some severe thunderstorm activity in South Jersey as well.

The skies opened up around 3:30 PM and the lights began flickering almost immediately. By 4:00 PM we were in darkness. Yes I say darkness because the storm clouds made it dark outside also. I came home to a house with a confused hus... Fri, 25 Jun 2010 10:54:07 EST It's time I did this... I've been thinking about starting a blog for some time now and all I've done is think about it. Well, it's time to do more than think, so here I am, typing away. Let's see how this goes.

I thought I'd start with a bit about my last 24 hours and how it impacts what I have eaten and my exercise routines.

Yesterday, my oldest daughter graduated from high school. It was wonderful and actually the 1-1/2 hour ceremony wasn't that bad. Well - expect for the heat. We sat on... Thu, 24 Jun 2010 14:21:26 EST
