My Thanksgiving in the ER
Saturday, December 15, 2007
I have had heartburn for years, but never really thought of it as a serious condition. I would take some Zantac and Tums and thought that I had the family curse. My grandma and my dad always had to take antacids as long as I knew them.
I just realized how important it is to get treated. Just this Thanksgiving I took just one bite of mashed potatoes at our holiday dinner and it stopped up my esophagus where I couldn't swallow at all. No water, not saliva, nothing! Scary! I went to the ER, had IVs with valium to relax my esoghagus, but that didn't work. And then when they put the scope in for further investigating, I gagged it up, but they thought they would have to do surgery. I had the paper signed and everything. The doctor decided that this was caused by inflamation caused my GERD.
I took Prilsec for a couple week after this occured and it helped a little but not completely, so my dr put me on Nexium and seems to be helping a little more. My dr wants me to get it scoped more to see if there are any more problems. Oh, another health issue to deal with, but I guess that is good to get it fixed.
