Day 40: Karma

Friday, February 09, 2018

I was annoyed with Paul this morning because he managed to schedule a meeting at the exact time Jamie needs to be picked up from school, so I'm on pickup duty again. I'll be glad to get back to normal next week! Jamie has Monday off, so we figure by Tues he should be up to walking home from school again.

But anyhow, karma comes around....Bam-Bam was worrying her ear again this morning (she's been doing it on and off for a week or so), so I called the vet today and the only opening they had before next Wed was at 4pm today. So I passed that one to Paul!

Speaking of Bam-Bam, the damn dog woke me up at 1:30am, barking her head off at something in the front yard. (Paul and Jamie completely slept through it, I wish I could do that!) I'd like to think she thwarted a would-be burglar, but knowing her, it was a cat walking across the lawn!

Anyhow...finally got back to sleep and then woke up from a nightmare around 3am and couldn't get back to sleep for awhile, ugh. Needless to say, I did not get up and work out at 6am.

Everyone is buzzing at work because yesterday a couple of serious sexual harassment allegations by a couple of male staffers came out against Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, who has been one of the big leaders on the #metoo stuff. (I work in the California Legislature.) I guess it was just a matter of time before we had males getting into the act, sadly, but we were all pretty blown away by Assm. Garcia being accused, never would have guessed her.

There's more to come, I keep hearing lots of rumors, including rumors about inappropriate texts being sent by a gay male Senator to a male staffer. Oy. I wish we could just get all the accusations out there at once so we can move on! It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop, again...and again...and again. What's really awful is that if you work on personal staff, you're out of a job pretty quickly if your boss ends up resigning, which really sucks (we're at-will, not civil service). One of the reasons I'm very thankful I work for a committee - even if my Chair got caught up in this, which nobody expects (he's a total grampa), I'd still be okay.

So it's tough...on the one hand, I'm really glad that this issue is getting aired and that people are learning that sexual harassment is not okay. But on the other, it makes us as an institution look really bad and it distracts from the good work we do. Sigh.

Anyhow, gotta get some work done before I go pick up the kid. Happy Friday!
