Before My Gym Bag Days

Thursday, August 21, 2014

Long before I started packing gym bags, I started taking comfortable shoes to work. When I wore heels and uncomfortable shoes I found I did not walk around near as much as when my feet felt okay. I changed shoes quite a few times a day -- sometimes to change which part of my feet felt bad -- and often had 3 or 4 pair of shoes under my desk! It helped me stay active at work.

When I started trying to actually get some exercise, athletic shoes joined the stack under the desk. I wore them at lunch, especially when I took my healthy lunch to the park and got some walking in. Sometimes I even changed into them for a walk break, increasingly twice a day. And then sometimes I decided to walk to the post office or the bank, so I actually wore them during work hours.

On my way home I passed a pretty lake with a walking path around it. Some of those work days were pretty intense and I found getting a good walk in before I went home helped me feel more together. I certainly enjoyed the walk more when I had the right shoes. So I started keeping athletic shoes and socks in my trunk at all times.

With a variety of professional and athletic shoes under my desk, and my trunk always ready to support my walking efforts, I became more active. Making it easy to be active really paid off for me!

Marsha, As long as I've known you, you've planned for success! You are such a great example of how well that works! It's not "luck". It's planning and working.
When I was still working, I also kept a gym bag packed and in my car. I knew myself to know if it was to be, for me, it had to be hit the gym before I hit home! Many years ago!

Another great idea! Having serious foot problems, I can only wear sensible shoes, never had dress shoes, sandals or anything like that. No excuses, right?

You are so right! Keeping your "active lifestyle" equipment handy helps you to lead an active lifestyle!

I am so glad for an active job. I did have a desk job for a couple of years and it really wasn't my "cup of tea" so to speak. I wear sneakers every day to work. I am even allowed to wear jeans, but I reserve those for Fridays - worn with a company logo t-shirt.

I know what you mean. I actually wore my sneakers to and from work and kept a couple of pr of flats under my desk to change into when needed. I broke my foot and ankle a couple of times so gave up heels many years ago. I used to walk in the Arch grounds on my lunch and watch the Mississippi river traffic.

Awesome! I'm lucky that my job doesn't allow me to dress up (certainly no dresses, skirts or open toe shoes in the lab), so I'm always ready for a walk :-)

Totally with you on this one. I got to the point (still there) when I will not wear "dress" shoes except to weddings and funerals. Athletic shoes, even to work! Thankfully, my workplace and the job I have to do allows this.

Really great suggestion!! I agree that women's shoes aren't usually conducive to any walking . . . or even getting up from their desks. Sorta contemporary
Chinese bound feet" thingy . . . crazy when you think about it.

Oh goodness, your blog brings back memories of when I worked and walked A LOT during breaks/lunch and to and from my car. How wonderful walking is!!! Sounds like you enjoy it too.
