Long before I started packing gym bags, I started taking comfortable shoes to work. When I wore heels and uncomfortable shoes I found I did not walk around near as much as when my feet felt okay. I changed shoes quite a few times a day -- sometimes to change which part of my feet felt bad -- and often had 3 or 4 pair of shoes under my desk! It helped me stay active at work.
When I started trying to actually get some exercise, athletic shoes joined the stack under the desk. I wore them at lunch, especially when I took my healthy lunch to the park and got some walking in. Sometimes I even changed into them for a walk break, increasingly twice a day. And then sometimes I decided to walk to the post office or the bank, so I actually wore them during work hours.
On my way home I passed a pretty lake with a walking path around it. Some of those work days were pretty intense and I found getting a good walk in before I went home helped me feel more together. I certainly enjoyed the walk more when I had the right shoes. So I started keeping athletic shoes and socks in my trunk at all times.
With a variety of professional and athletic shoes under my desk, and my trunk always ready to support my walking efforts, I became more active. Making it easy to be active really paid off for me!
