Intend to Run Happy!

Monday, August 18, 2014

I did my speed work in my neighborhood this morning. I'm in the taper week with a race on Saturday, so my plan called for 3 - 4 quarter mile intervals at 2 minutes each or 8 minutes per mile which is also 7.5 mph. The first two attempts I ran too fast (6.5 minutes per mile pace) but didn't make it a quarter mile. The third time I hit a full quarter mile in 1:56 on a slight decline. The fourth one had a slight incline, and I made it in 2:07. My total workout was 4 miles, mostly walk and jog.

More than once I've had a bit of hypochondria the week of a race. So my complaining after-workout glute was suspicious. But Saturday Martin, my nephew, mentioned that I seemed to be running on the outside of my shoes/feet. So between his comment and feedback from my glute, I looked hard and realized my shoes are quite worn on the outer edge. I had hoped to make it to the 15% off special for my running group in October, but it was clear today that wasn't going to happen. I went and bought new Brooks Adrenaline running shoes. Will get a little walking and one more run in them before Saturday's race. I think they'll help. I intend to run happy!!

You know the brand slogan for Brooks is "Run Happy", right??

In between pairs of Adrenalines, I tried out a pair of Brooks Glycerins. I had never had shin splints before and I got them the first week I was in the Glycerins. I took them back and exchanged them for another pair of my tried and true Adrenalines. No shin splints since!

Always take care of your feet and you'll know when it's time for new shoes. I agree with ONMYMEDS, if you can rotate through a few pairs, I think that's the best way to go. I have my Brooks, a pair of Saucony's and a pair of Asics.

I wear the outer edge too. I can always tell when I need new shoes because I get weird toe cramps when they are getting worn.

Run Happy! That's a great motto. emoticon emoticon

I have two pairs of Brooks and just love them. Although I am not a runner any more, I love the support and comfort that they offer. I am so glad that Martin noticed the problem!

Just a thought...if the Adrenaline's are wearing out on the outer edge, they might have more support than you need. You may want a less supportive shoe.

It might be a good idea to buy another pair when the group discount special becomes available in October. Then you can rotate pairs. I would think running in the Florida heat, one pair would barely get a chance to dry out from one day to the next.

I like Brooks. They make a good shoe that seems to hold up better than some other brands. I love the Ghost model. Every time I try something different, I get into trouble. I rotate 4 pair and when they are no longer good for running, I still wear them for everyday use around the house.

Good for Martin for pointing that out to you.

Good luck on your race. You just keep getting faster and faster.

Shoes are so important. Old shoes contributed to my first injury. My daughter has several pairs of running shoes and alternates. She keeps a log of the miles on each pair. I'm considering getting a second pair so I can alternate, too. They are just too darned expensive!! But it's worse to be injured.

That would hamper more than help you to run in old shoes. So glad your nephew noticed it. Enjoy the new shoes.

Very smart to have got the new shoes because you need 'em NOW!! Saving little isn't worth the potential for injury . . . you are worth it!

I land on the outside edge of my shoes, too. They certainly can wear down quickly.
