Hope

Saturday, August 16, 2014

"There are really only two ways, it seems to me, in which we can think about our existence here on Earth. We either agree with Macbeth that life is nothing more than a 'tale told by an idiot,' a purposeless emergence of life-forms including the clever, greedy, selfish, and unfortunate species that we call homo sapiens - the 'evolutionary goof.' Or we believe that, as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin put it, 'There is something afoot in the universe, something that looks like gestation and birth.' In other words, a plan, a purpose to it all."

(Jane Goodall, Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey. New York: Warner Books, 1999: xi-xii.)

I think the problem arises when we can't see ahead to the final outcome. A clerical error someone made in processing a job application put a six month delay on my being hired, which eventually led to me being in the right place at the right time-- five years later -- to meet the love of my life and have fifteen good years of marriage with him.

Sometimes it helps to remember that whatever is going on, whether it seems good or bad at the time, is just a stop along the way. emoticon

Jane Goodall is so wise. What an amazing person she is. I didn't know she wrote this book. I want to read it. Thanks for posting this. Myself, I'm often in the Macbeth camp. Sometimes I get a sudden feeling of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's point of view. Although I really want to live in that world with a purpose to it all, based on how I often treat myself, based on how we homo sapiens treat our planet and each other, unfortunately I sense greed, selfishness, an absence of empathy, ... Noooo! I like starting my weekend with the subject heading you chose for this post, "Hope."
