Fighting for her life

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

I began today at the gym with my best friend. We were doing circuit training. The last circuit was a boxing workout. I punched first, she held the mitts. She laughed as I began to punch. "Oh my God, you are punching so hard it's like you are thinking of someone in particular." I told her I was. I was, and am, thinking of my dear friend Bren aka Jitzuroe (on Sparkpeople). My best friend knows Bren's story. She knows Bren has arbitrarily and unfairly been hit by two vicious, debilitating conditions. I told Simone that "I am thinking of her illnesses when I am punching." For one thing, Bren would LOVE to be able to workout. She has a long history of fitness pursuits, including running marathons. For another thing, I know I am powerless to take her pain and suffering away and that makes me furious.

Bren and I and Jan aka Sparkfriend MamaDwarf, got together in the Bay area a couple years ago, when my son and I were on one of our giant roadtrips. It was such a good visit and I will always be glad we all made the effort to get together in person. Our bond formed over SP but strengthened in person. If you ever get the chance to meet up with either, or both, in person, jump at it!

Our dear Bren is strikingly, head-turningly beautiful. I know she thinks her beauty has been dimmed by all the mean symptoms and side effects but, actually, it hasn't been. I think physically beautiful women are ever more interestingly beautiful when the beauty is accompanied by something like a scar, or some other detail that tells a story. I never wish anyone pain, of course, but we all wind up with our bodies telling tales. Bren's tells a tale of a woman who has endured more than she should, and whose quirky, witty, sweet spirit just keeps showing up, no matter what. I have learned countless lessons from her, and been inspired daily, for years. I am honored to call her my friend. I adore her. Today is her 40th birthday and I, and a lot of people, truly celebrate the day that Miss Bren was born. She is a gem.

Bren is one of the most beautiful sparkfriends inside and out. I feel the same way as you about her pain. I often think about her and wish I could do something, anything, for her.
Thank you for writing this beautiful blog for her.

As always Cannie, you have a talent for knowing exactly what to say. I consider myself to be blessed by both Bren's friendship and by yours. emoticon

She is all of that and more. Well said, my friend. I will never forget our visit and hope and wish we can do it again someday, sooner rather than later. I am rarely short on words, but with tears in my eyes, it is hard to type. Thanks for saying what I feel about her and all of us, together.

I am praying for your friend, it's very inspiring what you do for her and I too wish that somehow it could help her. I agree meeting our SP buddies in person actually make the friendship stronger. I have met one of my buddies in person and my other buddy we have talked over skype since she lives in London. I agree that beauty is not only in the aesthetics but also in the stories that our body tells.
