Tried Some New Recipes

Sunday, July 20, 2014

My husband does the grocery shopping and he keeps buying those taco kits. I've told him repeatedly that I can make taco seasoning cheaper and healthier, but he hasn't wanted to try. So, last eve I fixed him his tacos out of the package and I fixed mine.

Mine had ground turkey, 1% fat. Yes, it cost $7.19 for 20 ounces, and his 20% fat ground beef cost less for the same amount, but I sure drained a lot of his away. I added 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 2 teaspoons of cumin, and 2 teaspoons of dried red pepper to mine per SparkRecipes. Mine had absolutely no salt, but didn't need it. It needed less water than his because it didn't have thickener in it. I suspect if I wanted it thicker, I could add corn starch. I grilled some bell peppers of various colors with onion and served low fat "refried" black beans with it. The whole meal was delicious. I should have taken a picture.

I did take a picture of another recipe I've been meaning to try for some time and finally did. It's banana "ice cream", pureed frozen banana. I know you can buy a special machine to make this recipe, and it might be a little better, but I thought it was plenty good just using my trusty blender. Ooops. I saw that picture yesterday. Now where is it? Gotta run now; grandkids are on their way. Perhaps I'll add it later.

I too, want to know if your DH tried your version? I buy taco seasoning at Sam's club - it comes in the big "spice" container and on the back it says how much to use for how much "meat." For a long time when vegetarian DD was at home, I would put it on the Morningstar Farms recipe crumbles for our "taco" nights.

I just saw the banana 'ice cream' recipe in a Spark article on how to make your desserts healthier.
That is great you can still do healthier versions of food for yourself in spite of your husband's purchases!
Keep up the great work!!

I have heard of the banana pureed ice cream...hope you do post the pic!

Funny, how when we eat so much healthier we really would rather have that even if it means more $$$

Thanks for sharing, Marsha! emoticon emoticon

It's fun to find new healthy recipes! Lucky for me my hubs and his Dad get enough deer meat to last me all year. I haven't bought ground beef in years! The difference in amount of fat even in lean ground beef is amazing. I cooked ground beef at a friends house and it was sickening to see all that yellow fat. I want to try frozen banana ice cream.
