My husband does the grocery shopping and he keeps buying those taco kits. I've told him repeatedly that I can make taco seasoning cheaper and healthier, but he hasn't wanted to try. So, last eve I fixed him his tacos out of the package and I fixed mine.
Mine had ground turkey, 1% fat. Yes, it cost $7.19 for 20 ounces, and his 20% fat ground beef cost less for the same amount, but I sure drained a lot of his away. I added 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 2 teaspoons of cumin, and 2 teaspoons of dried red pepper to mine per SparkRecipes. Mine had absolutely no salt, but didn't need it. It needed less water than his because it didn't have thickener in it. I suspect if I wanted it thicker, I could add corn starch. I grilled some bell peppers of various colors with onion and served low fat "refried" black beans with it. The whole meal was delicious. I should have taken a picture.
I did take a picture of another recipe I've been meaning to try for some time and finally did. It's banana "ice cream", pureed frozen banana. I know you can buy a special machine to make this recipe, and it might be a little better, but I thought it was plenty good just using my trusty blender. Ooops. I saw that picture yesterday. Now where is it? Gotta run now; grandkids are on their way. Perhaps I'll add it later.
