Reprise: One of THEM!

Saturday, July 12, 2014

It does not take a whole lot to freak me out. This morning I got an e-mail telling me I qualify for the USA Triathlon 2014 Age Group National Championships run August 9th in Milwaukee! This was shortly before I left to go meet some people to open water swim at a state park south of town.

I hadn't read it very closely, and I'm thinking "honor", and "what if"... fortunately swimming in open water put some sense back in my head... realizing how slow I am at this event. The e-mail had said I was in the top 10 percent of my age group, and this qualified me to participate in the nationals.

So I had a few bubbly dreams... started thinking about how much time I'd have to take off work if I chose to do it... etc., etc., and so forth! How would it impact my training plan for the rest of the year? My other events?

After getting home from the group swim (met three local triathletes I had not known before... two of them are racing Papillion tomorrow), I read the e-mail more carefully... it said by virtue of having finished THAT SPECIFIC RACE (Wisconsin Dells Rev3 Oly) in the top 10 percent of my age group, I qualified. So, since I was the ONLY person in my age group, I kind of automatically qualified.

The question then becomes... how confident am I of being able to compete with OTHERs who finished in the top 10% of this age group in other races? I only beat the time deadline by 7 and a half minutes! I am not "one of THEM", i.e. "them" being the elite age group athletes of the nation. Yep, I'm still there, denying athleticism.

Bottom line though is that I already have my calendar planned with events for the rest of the year... and another destination race is not in the budget until next February. So... we'll let go of the "Nationals" dream that I still deny I even HAVE... emoticon THIS year, anyway. Never say never.

But... I might... just might... put the Last Blast TRI on my calendar... if it's not in conflict with a work commitment. Have to check its dates.

Which brings me to today's audience participation question: Which "them" are you a part of? The Dreamers? The Doers? The Determined? Here's to being whoever you are!

LIFE is good. It's better when I'm fit. It's at its best when kindred spirits are along for the journey to better health and fitness! Consistently, consciously, and creatively making choices that support the overall goals, I remain GRATEFUL for each and every day!

Wow, congratulations! You definitely deserve that honor.

Age groups thin out as we age and we deserve recognition for longevity alone.
Competing in a tri deserves a special award.

Did you every check out the "age adjusted" results that some races include?
Regarding a swim in open water, just call me a dreamer.

I think you are a member of that elite age group athletes of the nation, representing your age group, whether you go to this race or not.

In the half marathon where I was in a relay group, I saw a few very old men, they looked about 80. They ran the full distance. Very very slowly.
I was inspired and motivated to see them, made me hope I will be so active and fit at that high age too.

After reading this blog I googled "Rainbow Connection" and listened to Kermit, AKA Jim Henson, sing about dreamers.
Dream on, Barb.

I put myself in a new category today for the first time ever; I AM A RUNNER :-)

It's taken me a long time to say that.

You my dear, are the dreamer and the quintessential DO'er. You think it, dream it, train for it and then you knock it out of the park!

Barb, that's awesome that you qualified! I think that's wonderful

For me, I think I'm a bit of all three -- dreamer, doer, DEFINITELY determined!

Ironically, my running group chose the name "Dream Chasers" today. I think my dreams are pretty attainable, but I am a dreamer. I'm also a determined doer. I think that's what it takes.

I suspect your decision about nationals is the right one for now, and your entry (confirmed by your status) into another Tri- is a second good move. Take care, Barb, and thanks for your support on my fitness goals!! -Marsha

Congrats to you on qualifying - hey, even if you were the only one who finished, you DID finish and you ARE an athlete! At this point I can't imagine even trying something like that! You rock!

I am determined, and a dreamer! I dream of what I can do and I am determined that my dreams will come true! And I am a doer because I have to do it if I am to make the dreams come true! I just a beginner as far as this athletic stuff goes but I get so much inspiration here on SparkPeople to push myself to new limits and bigger dreams!

I try to be determined! Even if you can't go it's still an honor. Even if you were the only one in your age group where were the others? Sitting at home on a couch?

Disappointed Dreamer at this point in terms of what my physical limitations allow. Need to get that Doer hat back on.
