Happy Birthday

Friday, July 04, 2014

My Helena has an American momma and a Canadian daddy. She is American born. July 1 is Canada Day and July 4 is Independence Day in the US. Living in Detroit, I am on the only land spot that is north of Canada. Windsor, Ontario is south of me. The two cities have celebrated together all week for years. Many years, the fireworks over the Detroit River were a joint effort between the two cities.

Helena is one week old today. (As of 9:24 pm). So, I get to say Happy Birthday to her, to my country and to the country of her daddy. I plan on taking advantage of this, especially as she gets older. I see a whole week from June 27-July 4 each year being spent doing lots of fun things. Beaches, zoos, carnivals, fireworks, picnics, etc. here we come!

A P.S. - I started a change container a few months back. This is my "Go to Disneyland with Granddaughter" fund. I've only got $40 so far, but I know it will be a few years before this happens. I want her to remember.

I have an "extra" daughter, Heather who is both my girls' best friend. They all have been inseparable for close to 25 years. She had her daughter, Alexis, last August 6. I'm so glad that Sherry also had a daughter. I can see me doing so many things with the two of them. I mentioned to Heather the Disney trip. I so hope that they come with us.

Does anyone suggest an age at which a child should go?

Lovely blog!! Commenting on your Disney Q: as soon as Helen can answer the Q "Who would you like to see at Disney?" is answered, then book a flight.

I grew up about 40 or so minutes from Disneyland in California and can mentally remember the scenery from the parking lot, ticket booths, beautiful green grass leading up to the train tracks and all the rides, characters and then sleeping in the car ride home. Wonderful, unforgettably happy family memories. Just the best! emoticon

Wait until the little one will be old enough to remember all the fun-maybe 3 or 4. By then, you won't be packing diapers and such.

emoticon I love how those 2 cities work together for a 1 week long celebration! That's so awesome. Awww .. . sweet Helena. What a great time to be born & starting off with Helena's BD. Me thinks this Grandma is going to color out (on the calendar) July 27 to July 4th every year.

I'd say around 1st grade could be loads of fun. Maybe between Kindergarten & 1st grade??? Have fun planning. I'm sure that jar will fill up before you know it.

I really adore how you start your blog with "my Helena." So sweet! She is blessed to have you in her life. Every moment that you spend with her, including now, will always been with her even if she won't consciously remember it. So glad that you are enjoying being a grandma and seeing yourself having more enjoyable moments in the years to come. :)

ETA: Maybe 7 years old? I have some pretty vivid memories when I was 7. Before that age, not so much. That way y'all can rehash the experience together as time goes by! Of course, you may not want to wait that long. It's Disneyland after all! :)

You are such a neat lady ! Your family is so lucky to have you ! Heather too...how neat is that ? I love your idea of a Disney land fund ! That will be a special time! We took our son to Disney World when he was 6. It was perfect ! A little more grown up & a little bit more independent. He still has fond memories...he loved it so much...we went back when he was 8.
