I walked in my local gym for the first time in two years yesterday. The nice receptionist showed me where to sit to wait for my trainer. My blood pressure was probably elevated severely. I kept looking around trying to remember how things worked. I happened to see some pictures of women who had lost weight that attends the gym. I smiles as I thought that one day I want my picture to be placed up there.
It only took a few minutes before my trainer arrived. Within minutes, My anxiety had decreased. I was certain so had my blood pressure. I listened with anticipation as she explained how this was my orientation. She would discuss a few things with me, and then show me how to work some of the equipment. Then we would take measurements, weigh in, discuss some goals, and create a workout plan for me during our next session. She also mentioned a workout which I am sure spike up my blood pressure a little.
Yet, I listened, and absorbed everything that she said. It was as if I was listening to a best selling author's audio tape. I tried to listen carefully, and take it all in for replay later. She suggested some food options for me. If I choose beef, Aim for no more than twice a week. That is do-able. Make sure I drink one glass of water before a glass of Diet Mt Dew to begin to wean myself off of it. She asked of my thoughts on weight lifting. I explained how I not only wanted to lose weight but tone what I did have but, I never really worked out with weights at the gym. I did not admit it but the idea of weight lifting actually sounded good to me.
It was not long before it was time to use the equipment. We walked over to a stationary bike first. It reminded me of the first time that I went, and how I was out of breathe within 5 minutes. She set up a five minute ride which I must admit was not as much of a struggle as it was my first time. Then we walked to the elliptical and set the timer for 5 minutes. My face must have changed colors because she told me that I could do this. She explained how to set the machine up and even how I probably had it on manual in the past. I climbed on with fear. Yet, I did my five minutes with pride. and a little struggle toward the end. We finished off using the treadmill, and the stretch machine that you use to stretch your body before, and after workouts.
We ended the session with an appointment to meet next Thursday. The old me would have been thankful that it was a week away. The new me wish that it could be sooner but knows she will be back at the gym within a few days to see exactly what I can do before Thursday arrives. I think I am really liking this new me. How about you?
