Bohemian Vs Hippie !

Monday, June 30, 2014

A girl came in to apply for a job the other day , who described her self as a *Flower Child*.During the interview , We talked about job duties and also I like to get the feel of the person to see how well they will fit in , Working in a hotel is not for everyone ! You have to have the right kind of attitude ! You have to have pride in your job even if others view it as menial ! Because baby if you don't do your job correct all of a sudden it becomes a HUGE DEAL !
So I thought you might want to hear how this interview went
Me; Because this is a smaller hotel , we don't really have one job we have several . Each day you might be asked to do something different , from weeding the gardens to cleaning to wait staff , office even cooking sometimes , of course you dont have to be an expert at all things but you should give it your best shot .We are very patient about teaching people new skills.

Flower child : I have to do what makes me happy , I care about the universe not rich people on vacation.I want to do IMPORTANT THINGS with my life.

Me: In the universe small things are the most important , Have you heard of the butterfly effect ? Besides our guests come from all backgrounds , its not important if someone is * rich or not * They all pay the same rate to stay here. In fact if I guess that someone might have saved all year to come here I make sure I give them special attention.

Flower Child : Well I do not like cleaning or wait staffing I don't know how to work in an office and I also dont like to feel confined I am a free spirit. I need space. I need to be creative .

Me: Well.. You just said you didnt like to do just about everything this job requires you to do .. So what is it that you feel you WANT TO DO ?

Flower Child: I want to become a bee keeper.

Me: At this moment the hotel does not have bee hives.... but it would be wonderful if at sometime in the future we could do that so the guests could have freshly made honey on their waffles , We will be sure keep you in mind if we ever decide to do that .

Moral of the story : Although its great to enjoy the * universe * You cant walk around with your head in the clouds all the time , Even the biggest hippy has to put his or her bell bottoms on one leg at a time. Karma is whatever you put out in the the universe , If you put out joy no matter what you doing , it effects other people in ways you might not even know. In fact they might not even realize it , Think about when you last called lets say an IT person and they were really kind and helpful , You probably said " Thank God ! " or went to dinner and the Server served you fast and efficiently ! You might not even have noticed and that's great because you should be enjoying your meal ! Our jobs do not define us as human beings , no matter how * big or small" My dad always said * work when its time to work and enjoy when its time to enjoy ! " No matter if your at work or at play you can always effect the UNIVERSE with your attitude !

    What a fun blog!
I was a flower child 50 years ago.
Then I discovered I had to provide myself and my child with food, clothing and shelter.
"Customer service" became my contribution to the universe, whether I was waiting tables, mowing lawns or selling plumbing parts. I can honestly and proudly say I have solved a million small problems. Thousands of people have been made a little happier because of our contact.
In return the universe has sent many good things my way, and now I'm the "rich person" on vacation.
What goes around, comes around!

Great post...back when I was the Director at our company's call center, I was perpetually interviewing people, and it never ceased to amaze me how many people would come in expecting we would cater the position(s) we had open to what they wanted to do instead of what the company needed. I am all for allowing people to pursue their dreams, but you have to have a realistic view on how to make that happen, and to keep in mind that the universe does not revolve around you. I love how you handled it without being ugly or demeaning, just being factual and honest. The world needs more people like you in it...

Have a great week,
Marijo

PS Love the reference to the Butterfly Effect...
