Well that just might explain it……..PCOS???

Friday, June 20, 2014

So my MD phoned today and I just might have PCOS. I mean from what I understand over the phone is that they couldn't see any actual cysts but that my ovaries are enlarged so that is indicative of PCOS. I have some of the other symptoms but if they can't see any actual cysts via ultra sound ….I mean how can they really give that DX?

RENLLY Thanks for your commentary! Very informative. They said my bloodwork was normal but they did not do an androgen level. I go see my PCP on monday and I will suggest that she order that and a few other tests. I am gonna have to read up on the glucose tolerance test as well. Thanks again! emoticon

Usually they see what they call the "string of pearls" - which are a bunch of small cysts on the ovary. But there are other ways to diagnose such as a combination of higher testosterone levels, higher blood pressure, higher blood sugar levels acne, thinning hair on scalp, irregular periods, extra hair on face/back/chest, and weight gain.

It can be harder to lose weight because of insulin resistance - but many women with PCOS find that diabetic like diets and drugs like Metformin can help to regulate blood sugar and help them to lose weight.

Good luck!

I lost an ovary to PCOS, but weight wasn't an affect before or after.
