Pajama 5K Race Report

Thursday, June 12, 2014

So, some of my rowdy runner friends put pressure on me to sign us up for this Friday evening fun run. Yes, it was just an excuse for a bunch of people to run around Safety Harbor, Fl. at 7:30pm..in their nightwear!

Now, some of you know how I preach to "have fun on your run!" THIS is the perfect example. AND the after party was going to rock hard!

Let's just go to the photos!

These ladies were on their way to check in and obliged me with my photo op request!

They definitely set the spirit of the race!

This was our group shot representing 3 different run groups!

Of course the ladies wanted to have their own shot...

This is the tip of the iceburg for risque shots.

This couple is from a Running for Brews group. I ran into them at the after party and then on Sunday at the Triathlon..THAT's another report coming!

Finally, D & I had our own moment.

Figured Mickey & Minnie had to represent!

I was going to take it easy this race as I had a Triathlon in less that 48 hours. At the starting line, I was talking to D and her girlfriends who were just going to have an evening stroll. They started at the back of the pack. Suddenly, I just saw everyone up front start. I didn't hear any air horn, bells, whistles, NADA!

I took off, started my Garmin as I crossed the starting line, and just started passing runners to get close to the lead pack! I decided not to check my pace and just ran comfortably, watching my posture, and getting a steady breathing pattern.

There would be a U-turn after the first mile. As I was coming up to it, I started waving to my more "elite" runners who had already made the U-turn. A couple of them gave me encouraging shouts almost like they were surprised to see me! I was wondering why they were running so slow! My Garmin went off and gave me my 1 mile lap time. I was surprised by the fastest 1st mile I'd ever had in a 5K, shrugged it and my non-existent pass off, and kept on running by the beautiful Tampa Bay!

I came up to the 2 mile marker, and my Garmin told me I was only about 15 seconds slower than my 1st mile. So much for negative splits! I actually stopped at the water station there, had a couple of sips of water then threw the rest in my face, and took off to finish the race! Once again, we had another U-turn that would lead us to the home stretch and finish line. My friends ahead saw me and started yelling again. I yelled back encouragement to the them...like they really needed it!
emoticon
Finally, I came down the finish chute and saw the timing clock. I started sprinting, wondering how fast I would go before I lost it. My lightning friends were at the finish line, cheering me in! They knew what I found out when I stopped. I broke my 5K Personal Record by 40 seconds! I wondered hoiw this would affect my Triathlon in less 36 hours.
emoticon
The after party was great! Good food, great beer, and good friends! I had so many runners congratulating me all night! The encouragement and support I get from all them, all the time, is priceless! I love 'em all!
emoticon
Hmmm, so I run faster in Mickey boxer shorts AND a cotton Mickey shirt? I have no idea what got me there. But it was nothing like what happened at the Triathlon!

My first 5K was in Kissimmee and it was a Valentine themed costumed event. I went into it as a powerwalker, but was thinking...."I may not be the fastest, but I can sure try to win the contest. Throwing embarrassment out the window, but keeping my modesty, helped me win 1st place. The $50 prize helped me have a positive outlook on these events.

Great race report, and pictures! My attitude has changed about races as well, it's more about having fun and less about winning awards nowadays.
