I Raised A Giant!

Thursday, June 05, 2014

I have been raising butterflies for over four years now, but I never had a Giant Swallowtail or a Zebra Longwing lay eggs until this year. Instead of citrus, I thought I would try planting a Hercules club and sure enough, I only had the potted plant out on the patio for two days and I thought I had seen a Giant Swallowtail in the yard, but I wasn't sure. When I looked at my plants, I was thrilled to see several eggs. Well, those eggs hatched and the six caterpillars turned into chrysalises. My first Giant Swallowtail just flew off into the sunset. But, not before I got pictures and dragged my neighbors over to see it. The host plant for the Zebra Longwing is the Purple Passion Vine. Although I have been growing them for years, it was not until this year that I actually had a Zebra Longwing lay eggs. I couldn't believe it! I was weeding and she left eggs right in front of me. I am proud to say that I have raised the Florida State Butterfly from eggs. I have waited a long time, but it was worth the wait.
