I Made It!!

Sunday, June 01, 2014

When I was 59 years old, over 5 years ago, my doctor told me I had 90 days to get my blood pressure and cholesterol in line or else I'd need to take medication. I did my best to become more active and eat healthier. Before the 3 month's time I had my numbers down to the normal range. I vowed I would not be taking any lifestyle-related medications until I was at least 65 years old and on Medicare. (I know for some people due to heredity or factors we don't understand that would not be possible. But I felt that despite the fact that heart disease is rampant in my family, that I could do it.)

As of today I am Medicare eligible. The only meds I'm on is for a skin issue on the bottom of my feet. (My hands are looking better than they have in years with just regular hand cream.) No high blood pressure, no cholesterol problems, no diabetes although many in my family have it, no chronic medications at all. And I have good health insurance for the first time in 6 years. Achievement and relief!!

Such a feeling of relief isn't it???? I had 8 years of being in limbo and praying I would not have anything catastrophic happen.

Now THAT's a huge birthday gift form you to you!!

It's amazing how much the health care system here in Canada is burdened by people who won't do that you did: take responsibility for yourself. And: me too. Intake nurse in the ortho clinic pointed out (when I was having hand surgery a few years back) that almost everyone at the day surgery clinic was scheduled for hip and knee surgery, and without exception overweight . . . as it happened that day. (Although I do understand that some such surgery is absolutely unrelated to weight of course.)

That's am amazing testimony of how a healthy lifestyle has changed you and made it possible to live without medication. I understand that many have to take it for medical reasons but hearing your story is so inspiring!!

Congratulations on a permanent lifestyle change!!

That is simply wonderful Marsha. Can you believe that I have high cholesterol and every time I go to a doctor they want to put me on meds. statins. My mother who is small like me has always had high cholesterol as well and she refuses to take the far heart disease doesn't run in our perhaps the good cholesterol helps. I hate the idea of taking the statins especially with all the other stuff I have to take for the autoimmune disorder.
But hey, good for you! You should just be so proud of yourself.
Woo hoo!
Have a terrific Sunday
