Making healthy food choices is not always easy

In my last blog several months ago I listed what I do to help my maintenance program. I am reviewing each one this week.

Maintenance is an ongoing challenge. Every day brings some opportunity to make a healthy food choice. I looked in the mirror today and told myself that maintaining keeps me healthy and drifting is not an option. And that food will not solve any problems that I am facing today.

However sometimes I make the less healthy choice. I might choose a high calorie special pasta dish at a restaurant and eat the whole thing. On Monday I chose a salad so it was a good day. I find that I miss eating certain foods and although I make lower calorie versions, I miss the high calorie versions at my favorite restaurant. I know all the how to eat out tips but sometimes it is better not to order the cheese enchiladas with sour cream at all but have a salad with dressing on the side. I choose not to eat out often because I hate having to think about what I can have.

Being thinner and feeling more energetic is a good trade off. So every day I work on making good food choices and acknowledge the times I slip up. When I do slip up I renew my commitment to being healthy. My goal is to keep the slip ups to a very rare occasion and periodically plan for a favorite food.

    I have found that over time, I have new favorites. I look at the vegetarian or fish menu only. I look for certain fish prepared a certain way. I love mushroom poppers, but find that broiling whole mushrooms gives me the same satisfaction without the breading and fat. I do not feel like they are trade offs.

    It is ok to splurge every now and then. Even Jillian michaels recommends eating right 80% of the time, splurge once a week.

    It is summer, so soft serve it is for me, only not as frequent.

    NEVER get down on yourself for splurging. It is too easy to then slip into old habits.

    You are doing great ... I do the same thing it is just easier not to have a little of something that I know I am not suppose to have but sometimes you just want to *sigh* and say i wish everyone made this choice also lol. Keep up the great work .
