Ski Bench Project

Monday, May 19, 2014

My DW wanted to make (i.e. Wanted me to make) a bench from old skis. Kind of a hybrid between this bench:

(from ) and this coffee table:

(from this

We had some old skis, plus she picked up a few more, and then we bought the lumber and the hardware. I have wanted a radial arm saw for a while, this project was a good excuse to get one (and it came in very handy!).

I ended up making two, in case we end up making a table at some point. Here is a photo with the bench base.

Here is the finished product.

And with DS1 and DD2 testing it out.

The biggest challenge was cutting the skis. With metal, plastic, foam, wood, and other layers of materials, I didn't have anything to cut it safely. Fortunately, I had the next best thing, a friend with an angle grinder and a cutting disk. Drilling through the skis was a challenge also, requiring upgraded drill bits.

DW is happy with them, we will see what pops up next on the honey do list.

Silly. Dont you know old skis are supposed to be turned into sleds? Much more fun (and dangerous) than a bench.

    What a great idea!

And I like the idea of getting a saw in the process, LOL.
