Spring Cleaning in Progress

Wednesday, May 07, 2014

Considering I did a major move in 2011 and got rid of more than 2/3 of my things - big and small - furniture, books, clothes, artwork, bedding, dishes, etc. I do very well with clutter. I am a minimalist at heart, so I am don't have knicknacks or visible clutter. What I have is stuff you cannot see - my closets and some unpacked boxes. I like my things to be beautiful yet functional. I am doing Flylady to motivate me to tackle every room in the house, with a critical eye and pare it down even more. Also I want to get through those last unpacked boxes.

We are making a major change in our den which is seldom used. It has a very large beautiful desk, that will go into our family room for jigsaw puzzles. The den will get a functionality makeover with Ikea bookcases, storage cabinets for games and 2 desk configurations.

FLYing Lesson: Declutter 15 Minutes a Day

-set a timer and spend 15 minutes a day decluttering. That’s it. Anyone can do anything for only 15 minutes, even if you have to break it down into five-minute segments.

Exercise - Monday night I walked to class and got a ride home. Last night we were out for dinner and I walked home. I got bored with just walk for the sake of walking, so I am trying to tie it into my regular activities.

Eating out - I found a Chinese restaurant with a small buffet with mostly vegetables with a small amount of protein. The meats and fish are deep fried, so I will only pick up 3 or 4 pieces. This allows me to eat out and still lose weight. Hubby is not so taken with it, but is agreeable to support my weight loss.

About a puppy - I haven't followed up on adopting Cooper yet.

I drafted this letter -

Lisa - Thanks for the information. We are looking for an athletic dog for daily walks and possible fly ball or agility, so Cooper looks like a good fit.

Here is a picture of Kali, our American Water Spaniel. Her face looks very much like Cooper's with the narrower nose. Kali is 10 years old, playful and walks 1.5 - 2 hours a day. I think she would like to have a buddy too.

We haven't followed up on adopting Cooper. We are leaning towards an American Water Spaniel puppy, like Kali. But we have concern for existing dogs in need of permanent homes. We love the energy Cooper has and would prefer to meet him first, then start the adoption process. Having our friends, neighbors, and vet interviewed first; and then we get to see him and not click.... well, I am uncomfortable with that.

I have no doubt our references would be very supportive of our character and care of dogs. Kali is a special needs dog, and has been spoon fed twice a day for 10 years. She had an expected lifespan of 18 months and thrives to this day. In the past we have adopted aged dogs in need of a loving and care home.

** what do you think of the letter?

Thanks for the advice about getting new jeans. I only have one pair left and I am about 5 pounds away from getting a couple new pairs.

The master bedroom looks great now and I am starting on the next bedroom.

Thank you for sharing the Flylady link - I need help with the clutter! I tend to bring home way too much from school and rarely take it back. ugh.
Your letter is fabulous and very clear about your needs.
Have a beautiful day! And go get those new jeans!

The buffet helped me lose 100 lbs successfully . . . I could never order that many veggie sides elsewhere without paying twice the price. I regret the sodium content is not healthy, but we have to take small steps to reach our goal. Love the dog letter -- It's evident that Kali is loved greatly and cared for well.

Yupp - FlyLady's 15 minute rule is one to live by.

I really like your letter and think you are very definite with what you express there. No point in going through all that effort to qualify to adopt Cooper until you know you would really want to adopt him. You can't tell much about a dog until you meet the dog and spend some time with the dog. I don't imagine the folks would want to spend all that time checking your references only to have you meet Cooper and half an hour later say, "NO - his personality just isn't going to work for us." Bravo to you for being honest and responsible in this process!

I was a true minimalist when I was younger. When I met my husband I had a love seat, end table, 2 lamps, a dinette set, bed, bedside table, chest,. My luxury was a 12 black and white T.V. that I seldom used. No other electronics. I had enough necessities like cookware, towels, and sheets to just get by. I liked it but don't want to return to that point. I still don't get into the electronics and prefer functional things but am not opposed to a few frivolous things like satellite T.V., internet, a tracfone for emergencies, and knickknacks now.

    The letter sounds good.

That is a great letter! I just turned down a dog myself, because it was just not what I am looking for. I know I would have grown to love her, but I really want a minimal shedding dog. Who am I kidding? I want another Yorkie! However just booked a great trip for October 2015, so will not be getting a dog until after that trip (France! River Cruise! Bordeau! Paris!) My husband will not use a kennel again, and I am inclined to agree. But Cooper sure does look adorable! and I had no idea Kali was a special needs dog! You still spoon feed? My sweet Bizzy had a heart condition and was allergic to everything, so took medication her whole life, but you'd never know it to see her running and jumping! Dogs are such a joy!!!

Love the letter! I need to try the 15 minute time for removing clutter. It can be so overwhelming when you try to do it all at once. You are doing great! emoticon

I need to work on some clutter issues myself. I will check out that site and see if it can get me going a little :) I also like how you are using the walking in different ways!

I follow Flylady too. I loved the letter.I think Kali is a lucky dog to have found a home so responsive to her needs. I have an English Springer Spaniel that I love dearly My first Spaniel was a rescue dog but because I was devastated when she died my husband drove two hours north of here to get me an English Springer Spaniel puppy for Valentine's Day less than a week after my beloved True died.So I understand both points rescuing a dog in need of a home and getting a puppy who will be with your family a long time.

I like the letter. Getting a dog (or in your case another dog) needs to be a well thought out decision. It sounds like you are taking the time to make a good decision... whatever that may be.

Chinese food is a problem for me, unless I make it myself and can control ingredients and portions. Finding a restaurant that works for you is major. Way to go!

Thanks for the info, I think it's a hard task for 99% of us, either to decide on what to part with or just setting the time aside to de-clutter.
