How did you get started?

Monday, May 05, 2014

Today I was minding my own business in the break room, eating my lunch (it's in the bag), when a co-worker timidly approached and asked "Can I ask you something non-work related?"

"Of course," is my automatic response....

"Um... you do marathons, right?"

"Half marathons, yes... I've never done a full."

"How did you start?"

So, you all know how I can bubble about things that are my passion... so I told her. I started with a couch to 5K program I found on line. She went on to explain that a buddy of hers had challenged her to do the Lincoln Half Marathon next year... so of course I offered the advice to sign up right away when it opens, and promised to get her the link.

Meantime, I encouraged her to do a couch to 5K, and sign up for a 5K first!

Funny, when the Lincoln Marathon comes to town each year, more and more of us get drawn in to it. I'm thrilled to see people getting fit. I'm thrilled that newbies come to me to ask how I did it. Especially those who know I used to carry a lot of extra pounds. This gal knew me heavy.

Some of the newer workers never knew me heavy... and still they come to tell me they signed up for their first half next November. Or that they are starting to get in shape for their wedding.

I'm loving my "mentoring" role at the office.

LIFE is good. It's better when I'm fit. And it is at its best when you have friends and family along for the journey. Consistently, consciously, and creatively making choices to support a healthy lifestyle... I am GRATEFUL, for each and every day. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Folks at work are very supportive of my efforts and those of another employee who has lost 60 pounds and has at least another 60 to go. If both of us are eating lunch at the same time, someone always brings the conversation around to fitness and nutrition. It's fun and I think others are encouraged because both of us have shown a lot of progress, but still have a way to go. I think we make it seem attainable. There's now a group who walk during break time and several people are making better food choices. Baby steps, but it is encouraging.

That's so awesome! Having people like you to talk to makes it easier for those stop and go runners to keep going! I have a problem with sticking with a running routine. When I do run I love it, I just haven't figured out the routine yet :/ Thanks for being there!

What an honor to serve at the fitness mentor at your place of work! And a better mentor they could not have. I hope you continue to run first half marathons with newbies. You are so good at it! Your passion is contagious and encouragement almost palpable. I know. -Marsha

As a newbie to 5Ks I know how much having someone to ask questions of. It is quite a honour to have people look to you for advice and I hope to pay it forward sometime too.
