Hospital

Monday, May 05, 2014

Last night my boyfriend and I left to go to Orchard Supply Store when I got a phone call from my uncle saying my bedridden uncle fell while using the bathroom. We rushed home as quickly as we could and my uncle was face down in the hallway. My uncle and boyfriend tried to get him up but couldn't. I called 911 and had an ambulance come to pick him up and they took him to the hospital. He had been not feeling well for the past 2 days prior to his fall and was throwing up. I thought it was the stomach flu that was going around. The dr ran tests and found out he had a 105 degree fever, might have bruised ribs from the fall, and pneumonia. They admitted him to the ICU department for having a fast and irregular heart rate, bladder infection, pneumonia, and complaints of chest and abdominal pain. He might have a stool virus (I couldn't understand the nurse today because of a heavy accent) and has stones in his gallbladder. They're trying to figure out what's going on with his heart and stomach. I'm running on less than 2 hours sleep today and will be going back to visit him after dinner. I came home to allow him to rest and to make dinner and make sure to pay the bills since it's the beginning of the month. Going out to water our plants and do some of my exercises. I woke up this morning to get my 3.25 mile walk in.

Glad he got to the hospital and is receiving good care. You must be exhausted and worried.
Here is som general information based on what you reported. Pneumonia frequently responds to antibiotics quickly and he will show improvement in 24 hrs. His chest and abdominal pain can be caused by an inflammation of his gallbladder that may be infected. He will be on antibiotics that will help resolve the infection and inflammation. The gallbladder stones sometimes get stuck in a narrow duct and are painful and irritating. If he had a stuck stone, it can cause the gallbladder to become infected. If the stone passed on its own, He should feel better in 2-3 days after the antibiotics. He may need to change to a low fat diet to prevent another episode.
They cultured his stools and are still awaiting results. If he has a stool virus, they will give him an additional anti-fungal medications for that. It should get better in 3 days. If he has a bladder infection, the same antibiotics he is already on will help him heal in 3 days.
His irregular heart rhythm and the increased rate may have been caused by the high fever and the vomiting may have depleted his electrolytes like potassium that regulates the heart. His IV fluids should replace those within 24 hrs and his heart may return to normal quickly.
He will be in ICU at least 1 more day until his heart issues resolve and his pneumonia improves. Then he can be transferred to another hospital room to continue to receive antibiotics. He will be there for a couple more days depending on how his morning lab work shows improvement. Ask the nurse for the lab work numbers daily to see the trend and improvement toward normal values. While he is in the hospital you will meet with a special nurse called a discharge planner. She is the one who helps determine what additional care his insurance qualifies for after discharge.
He will still be weak when he is ready to leave the hospital. The doctor may want him to be sent to a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF pronounced sniff) for rehabilitation so he can walk safely to the bathroom. The will continue to give him medications there and physical therapists will work with him 3 times a day so he can regain his strength. Another choice is a Home Health nurse who visits your house.
Hope and pray you stay well rested and that he heals quickly.
