The Oatmeal Diet: Day 6

In the spirit of David Letterman, I'll provide a top ten list for why I like the oatmeal diet: two meals a day are totally oatmeal. I use the steel-cut kind, which take about 30 minutes to cook.

1. You can make a large amount and microwave them for individual meals.

2. Oats are very very low on the gylcemic index.

3. This kind of hot cereal is filling and has a fairly quick satiety point---in other words, I don't feel as if I am still starving when I am done eating.

4. Inexpensive! I've saved quite a bit of money in just 6 days.

5. Steel-cut oats does not give me blood sugar spikes the way that other carbs do.

6. Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber.

7. If you are avoiding gluten (which I am not) it is gluten-free.

8. It is monotonous but the monotony paradoxically does not inspire cravings.

9. It's rumoured to be good for cholesterol.

10. I've measured my blood sugar and I don't need to take any extra insulin either before or after eating oatmeal.

So that's good enough for me. It may be unadventurous fare, but I've rarely struggled with cravings in the past 6 days.

    Good to hear that it is working for you. It sounds very interesting. I love steel-cut oats, too, so this might be something to consider.

    I'm so sad that so far on 'The Plan' oatmeal is the ONE thing I'm very reactive to! I used to eat it every day - but I just re-tested it a couple of weeks ago and once more it sent my weight up two pounds overnight! Sad - I miss it!

    I eat oats every day. Don't eat sweet, I love them savory. I make mine in a pressure cooker with vegetable broth in place of part of the water. Steel cut is the way to go. I think they keep me off the white carbs.

    Oh this is excellent news! There's something about oats...their heaviness? starchiness? texture? they give me a satisfaction similar to what I get from bread or pasta but without the cravings that the more refined starches provoke. I eat several different whole grains & steel-cut oats are my favorite. They can be sweet with molasses and milk, or savory in the non-stick skillet with a bunch of veggies and some salsa. I also kinda like not having to think about a meal - when it's pre-planned and ready to go it's one less thing I have to deal with. I'm so glad about the good blood sugar response you're having! Thanks for sharing -

    It's what works for you! The oat bran is the blood pressure and cholestrol lowering part, I think.
