Small, But Significant, Non-Scale Victory

Thursday, May 01, 2014

Sunday my son-in-law arrived with the grandkids for me to watch and a box of Rice Krispies and a bag of mini-marshmallows. Normally, Rice Krispie Treats are not in my cooking repertoire, but since I had a request, complete with most of the ingredients, I did it. Kids helped to measure, pour, push microwave buttons while standing on the step stool, mix, pat down, and clean up. I cut the treats into squares. Now how could that be a victory?

Well, for years when a box said it served 4, two of us would eat it all. When the recipe said it makes 12 muffins I said it was wrong, it could only make 8. I remember thinking that the manufacturer always overstated the number of servings.

I cut the resulting treats into 25 squares. I read the recipe. It said makes 20 squares!!

Edit: That was 6 cups of Rice Krispies and 5.5 cups mini-marshmallows with 3 Tablespoons Smart Balance Buttery Spread. I hope no one bursts my bubble and tells me the manufacturer has increased the serving size.

There was the story of my mom passing treats to the "older" kids and my brother stated he wanted 2 - so my mom broke it in half and handed him the 2 pieces.

Genuine NSV and funny too!! What used to seem a "skimpy serving" to me now quite often appears ginormous: except maybe for my giant leafy green salads!!

You did it just right and the smaller pieces are a treat without pushing you over your limit. Glad the GC could be part of the fun.

I used to make those and eat them until I had a bad reaction to corn and now I don't eat them because they put corn products in rice krispies.

Hehe, I think we're cut from the same cloth. I always thought the number of servings were overstated too. Great NSV!

Ha never put that into words before ......too funny! Sometimes when I look at something and it states "serves 2" it generally serves one around here!

Oh, what a fun thing to do with the grandchildren! Wish mine lived closer so I could do things like that. When I do go see them in IA, I always pack a "Grandma" basket full of arts & crafts, games, & goodies to make. It is sooooo much fun! Miss those little guys. emoticon
