How to resume exercise after having a cold?

From Friday afternoon I've been in bed, I got a nasty cold.

I've been a good kid, and stayed in bed ALL THE TIME, drank my tees, slept a lot, and am back to normal life by today (Monday).

However, today when I've been pedaling on my bike to my German language course early in the morning, I felt that I'm still not 100% ready for exercise.

I felt the air unusually "fresh" in my lungs, I felt the wind cold on my hands, and got pretty tired after our classes finished at 1pm.

I'm wondering, what is a good way to resume my usual exercise habits?
I want to heal completely, but I also want to move as soon as possible.
My dilemma is: how to decide when I'm ready.
Shall I go full speed now, and the last bits of sickness will wear off faster, or shall I be careful, not to fall back being sick again, but then I stay in this softy-body-state for longer.

It was raining in the morning, but it gets sunny pretty fast here, and then rainy again, and then sunny again...


How do you resume exercise after being sick?
So, any tips, advices?

    Listening to our bodies is the key, IMHO...!

I am more patient with myself when bouncing back and take it easy for a bit before pushing my workout.

Lovely pic...there are so many wonderful places in Europe to see.

    I don't often fall ill but when I do, I just ease back into the fitness routine gradually, perhaps by doing gentle walks for a couple of days and then building back up over a few days, especially if the illness affected my lungs. If I can't breathe normally, I don't go!

    Coming back from a cold is tricky. It depends in part on how your body reacted to the cold. I've found that when the cold stays in my head, running makes it go away faster. I conceptualize this as making my metabolism run faster in general, so it deals with the virus faster.

But when the cold is sapping your energy, or it's in your chest, it's not time to come back hard. Listen to your body. Maybe do a little biking or running, keeping it easy and gentle; and quit when you get fatigued. Then the next day, do the same thing and notice whether it takes a longer time to get fatigued. Once you notice it taking longer to fatigue yourself, you can increase the intensity a little. That way, you gradually get back to what you want to do.

The problem is, you don't want to do too much, too fast and end up sick again. How do you find out how much is too much? Unfortunately, the only way I know to find out is to make a mistake.

    Your picture is beautiful. What a lovely street. I would listen to my body. If you are tired, then try resting a few days more..or do half an exercise. It is hard to not exercise. I am glad you are feeling better.

    I have been out of action for at least 3 weeks and had to ease back into it very gently. When I was fit for nothing energetic, I did some gentle yoga, soI was not totally inactive.
I notice that the 3 times I have been ill during the last 12 months have all been aer I had been overdoing the exercise, as I recognised with hindsight.... So ease back in gently. A week ago I was still tiring very quickly and not able to do a full workout. This week I seem to be fine, tho I may still tire quicker than usual. I. Your situation, commuting by bike, its rather different. Could you maybe do some of the journey on public transport? I think you can often take bikes in buses or trams.

    I think you answered your own question, Oliver - if you're feeling that fatigued, you're not ready! But I agree that it doesn't mean to wait to start exercising again, just listen to your body and take it a little slower and shorter than usual. Gute Besserung!

    Usually " easy does it" as they say.
You have to ease into it,also depending on how rigorous your normal pace is, I would probably do it all, but at a much slower rate,to begin with and then pick up speed/work load as you get better.
As you are in Germany?

    When you feel better, you start doing BUT you don't jump RIGHT back where you were--you need to be kind to your body and ease back into it. Now--biking to/from work or school--do it but slower. That would be my advice.

    It's funny that you should post about this. It's exactly what I'm going through right now. Here's what I did. I didn't not actually stop exercising. I did cut my sessions in half and worked out twice a day instead of all at once. I'm tired and for a while I wasn't sleeping well at all because of the cough, but I kept on going. Get your sleep, take your vitamins and keep moving. It's good for your lungs and your body.
