Recently, my cousin told me that she firmly believed that everything in life happens for a reason. I thought that was an interesting outlook (and one that can definitely help you through life's ups and downs), but didn't really think of it much beyond that...until this week.
It's just a little happening in the grand scheme of things, but I'm wondering if this could possibly have been coincidence. First a little background: I have never gotten into Facebook. I did sign up for an account over a year ago, but I just didn't "get" it. (I know, I'm a programmer - it's not as if I'm technically inept - but I just didn't understand what I was supposed to do on there.) My running coach had been telling me for weeks, though, that I should join our club's group on Facebook; as that's where everyone discusses where and when to run together.
So, last Saturday, I finally took the plunge. I set myself up properly on Facebook and joined the group. Wouldn't you know it! On Tuesday (just THREE DAYS after I set up), a message was posted to our group to say “The Soon-to-Sell-Out” Disney races opened registration at noon Eastern time today. I got on the site at 3:20 p.m. my time (so, 4:20 p.m. Eastern time), and the 5K, the 10K, and the Dopey Challenge (one race per day for four days – 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon) were all already sold out. The half-marathon was already at 85 percent of capacity. By the next day, it was completely sold out as well.
If my coach hadn't been so insistent...if I had decided to leave Facebook until this weekend...I would have been SO disappointed! I had no idea the races would sell out that fast! They aren't until January, so I thought I'd pop onto the site sometime in August to register.
As my cousin says, "Everything happens for a reason." She's made a believer out of me. I know, now more than ever, that I am meant to run that race and that starting to train for running when I did was the right decision.
