Input needed

I am seriously mulling over the idea of starting up an online coaching / weight loss mentoring program. This is still a long time in the making and is far from actually rolling out but I'm just considering my options. Since I work shift work, doing something online would make sense because my primary working hours are so weird. I may just simply stick with my original idea of doing a weight loss support group at my local gym and leave it at that. I guess I'm simply thinking out loud and looking for input from my friends.

What do you think? Crazy? Don't bother? Investigate further?

    Robert, I think you have a lot to offer the world, and your weight loss success is clearly invigorating you to try new things. I think you come across well online, and you could be very successful, but I agree with some other posters that you should carefully assess whether you're stretching too thin to be effective. If not, then go for it!

    well, you have a lot of friends on here and on FB so I am sure you could find people to join. Ultimately, with your personality, you also need to do something face to face. I think you would get more satisfaction out of getting to know the people personally. But I definitely think you should consider doing both on a small scale. Once it catches on you can go global, like Curves! or spark!

    I think you would be such an excellent mentor BUT I want to caution you about over extending yourself and then crashing. That tends to happen to me so I caution others about it.

    I would offer online support to the group at the gym first, and see how it goes, how much real time it takes, committment, etc. I'd also investigate further and see how others arrange this. I think as an addition to a gym program it would be a huge plus for members.

    My opinion: start @ the gym and move on from there. You certainly are capable of doing it! You just want to make sure you do it right!

    I think it's an excellent idea, but, be sure to do as much research as possible first. Look at how others are doing it. Contact an online business such as what you are thinking of and inquire. Be sure to ask them to share all the things that happened that they did not expect. Make sure the business you call is outside of your geographical region so you are not viewed as direct competition.

    Again, fantastic idea and you can surely make it happen, but, consider all that goes into it.

    I think you would be great at this. I agree with a few of the other comments...maybe start slow with a support group at your gym and then start up the online mentoring. It would be a great trial run and give you added support and success stories for your online venture. :)

    I feel like there is a need for more real, "normal" type people to show it can be done, and help get sensible information and plans out there. I greatly admire you because you share not only the successes, but the struggles as well. MOST of us can relate, and it's so helpful to know we're not alone, and we CAN triumph!!!!

    I would definitely say investigate further! You could do it in conjunction with your in-person group, as a way for those in the group to get motivation and encouragement between meetings, or for those who can't make the meetings to still participate. I'm starting to see a lot more fitness & motivation groups on facebook, that would certainly be an easy place to start a group, or you could start a team here on spark too!

    Look into it, explore your options, start with the gym and get the feel for that. Maybe you can do both. If the online thing really takes off, you could start some office hours, maybe it's a way out of working shift work forever (unless you're good with crazy hours, then that's cool). Don't discount anything that can help you improve and pay forward what you've learned, for others!

    I agree with DEESHAREE. Starting in the gym makes sense. It will help you work out the kinks of your program and get real-time feedback from "real" people. You certainly have a lot of knowledge on the subject so I think it's great that you want to share it.

    I liked what DEESHAREE said below, about supplementing your in person training with the online support... that would be so "whole package".

    Here's another thought... have you talked with the SparkPeople folks about being a Spark coach/mentor? Or are you thinking independent? Advantages and disadvantages to both paths.

    As for should you be in that role? Absolutely... find your own balance between the two... and don't forget to keep putting on your own oxygen mask first! emoticon

    I think you should first start it at the gym, and for added support do online mentoring. This way you can develop your program with "real people" then have them guide you to build an effective online program! All the best, Dee emoticon
