Road Runner and Coyote

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Back to cartoons! Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies developed the coyote forever chasing the Greater Road runner through the American Southwest desert. From 1949, Wile E. Coyote chased and tried to trap the road runner, using incredibly complex Rube Goldberg type machines and plans. He obtained most of his contraptions from a mail order supplier, Acme Corporation. Jet powered rollerskates, rocketsleds, earthquake pills ... none worked, but he persisted. He usually ended up burnt up, crumpled, or squashed, as the road runner "meep-meeped" and ran off. One source claims the E. stands for Ethelbert.

Here in New Mexico, we have a commuter rail system connecting the Albuquerque area with Santa Fe, called the railrunner. When the doors close, they make a " meep-meep" sound.

If you're on the highway and Road Runner goes beep beep.
Just step aside or might end up in a heap.
Road Runner, Road Runner runs on the road all day.
Even the coyote can't make him change his ways.

Road Runner, the coyote's after you.
Road Runner, if he catches you you're through.
Road Runner, the coyote's after you.
Road Runner, if he catches you you're through.

That coyote is really a crazy clown,
When will he learn he can never mow him down?
Poor little Road Runner never bothers anyone,
Just runnin' down the road's his idea of having fun.
