A difficult time

In mid February I was shopping one day when I felt light headed – this has happened before but usually rights itself when I sit down and have a drink. This time it didn’t – I passed out instead!!
I briefly came to in the ambulance and again in emergency but it was 2 hrs before I really was conscious. Even then it took the rest of the day for my pulse to come back to normal. It was thought to be a stroke but this has been ruled out,
Then I started a stomach ache. To cut a long story short I had a blockage in my bowel – and spent the next 14days in hospital. Since I had had previous operations in the same area and because of my weight and age – the surgeon decided to treat me conservatively – which meant give me stuff to drink and hope they could clear it. They did!!
I heard later that as well as substantial narrowing of the large intestine the small intestine had twisted causing a total blockage. It untwisted itself.
Unfortunately I was unable to be fed during 13 of those days because my blood vessels collapsed and they couldn’t get a feed line in and I couldn’t eat or drink because I had a nasal gastric tube in and all I had was a saline drip– great I lost 7kg (15lb approx.) Then they got the line in and sent me home with it for a couple of weeks in case it was needed again and it got infected!! This meant very strong antibiotics.
Not so great – because I lost the weight so fast – I lost muscle – all the muscle I had worked so hard to build up over the last 4yrs!! I came home unable to walk more than 1 room distance before I had to sit down.
This was rather depressing – I was back to using a walker, unable to go shopping and needing help with showering and basically relying on mu DH for most things!! This was not good as I am his carer as he needs help with things too!! What a pair of old crocks we had become – the joys of aging – definitely not gratefully!!
After a day of frustration a home I decided I had had enough with my loss of mobility and more important to me- my loss of independence. I had to get strong again – I did it before so why not again – but this time I know exactly what to do – and have the DVDs already!!
So every day I do some Chair Exercise and force myself to walk that bit further both with the walker and without – to make meals even though I have to rest at times – and each day get stronger!!
It would have been so easy to give up when I was so mobility limited – but what would I really have gained – I would have lost so much more – mobility, flexibility and independence as well as so much else!!
I am still undergoing tests to find out what is causing the narrowing of the large intestine – and I may yet have to have an operation to rectify it – and then will be back again at square one with mobility and if so – I’ll do it all again – those of you who know me know I will never give up!!
By the way I put some of that 7kg(14lb) back but am still about 2kg (4.4lb) down from before I entered hospital and am maintain that loss – however healthy food and regaining my health are my priority!!
