Tomorrow is my 60th birthday!!! I have a red velvet cake in the oven to take to potluck tomorrow so I will have less to eat myself. My coworkers kept sneakily dropping cards and small gifts on my desk Friday. I received some nice organizing items, chocolates to restock my jar, an iTunes card, a future lunch date, and a lottery ticket! No winning numbers, but it was fun anyway.
My 8 day retreat over spring break was a gift to myself, even before I got there. I had an early flight, so had time to enjoy a few hours at the Fine Arts Museum in Boston before getting on the train. I hadn't been to the museum in a long time, and it was a treat to wander alone, looking at whatever drew my attention.
I spent the first 48 hours of retreat doing little more than sleep, sit, and show up for meals. After having been sick most of March, it was wonderfully restorative to nap, meditate, and go for slow strolls outdoors bundled up in winter wear. By the end of the week, my cough had gone, and I had energy to hike outdoors no matter what the weather.
That is a big beautiful snowy owl. Seeing one land on the rocks by the ocean was a highlight of my retreat. I saw this BIG bird out there, and when turned its head, I realized, "That's not a seabird; that's an owl!" As I watched, it took off, and I could see its full wingspan and underside as it glided past the arched window where I was sitting. How awesome is that?
