I'm proud of myself for setting this goal and accomplishing it and (mostly) I'm so happy it's over. For years I said I would NEVER do more than 5K...and now I am a half marathoner.
My respect for those of you who do these races repeatedly...and especially for marathon runners...has grown exponentially. The training and commitment is intense. Kudos to you!
In contemplating my feelings about my own experience, it is apparent that the challenge of doing a long race is about more than completing a specified distance in a certain amount of time. When you sign up and pay your money, you are agreeing to complete the race on someone else's terms. You start when they say start. You run where they say run. It doesn't matter if you like the route or not. The weather conditions do not matter...nor does the condition of the restroom facilities. You are saying, "I will subject myself to whatever happens, and I will push through my own discomfort to earn the T-shirt, medal, recognition."
To me, this part of the challenge is far greater than completing the distance. The control freak side of me has a hard time with these terms. I can see very clearly that it's an area in my life that needs some work.
If you are not challenged, you are not changing.
