Talk of Food

Yesterday I was extremely busy. Did my steps in the early AM before doing my errands. I stopped at 2 different grocery stores to get all our stuff. I go to Aldi for our vegetables and some fruit. Their prices are so much lower than the Meijer. Aldi carries their own brand (Millville) of cereal that my DH actually prefers over the name brand stuff. And DD likes their pizza, which (I don't know how they do it) is lower in calories than the name brand stuff. They carry many different kinds of lettuce which I just adore and leaf spinach in a half size bag so none of it goes bad during the week (another plus). Meijer has been having asparagus on sale for the past month and I buy 3 bundles each week and cook it up and have it in my salad each morning. Delicious! Salad without asparagus just is so plain. And I've been adding a half to third avocado too which is fantastic. I eat a huge salad for breakfast now. I ate cooked spinach all winter with tomatoes and zucchini for breakfast so this is a nice change. It really gets my day on a good beginning.

Meijer is my go-to for fresh fruit though. I usually have 2 cups of 2 different fruits each morning with my salad. My goodness I absolutely love fresh pineapple. And cantaloupe (a potassium powerhouse). And lately I've been lucky to get strawberries that taste divine. And blackberries. Oh my goodness I could eat blackberries every day of my life and be a happy woman. And last week Pink Lady apples appeared in the store - WOW - they are fantastic. I've been eating only Granny Smith since last summer and these new apples are such a treat. They are crunchy and slurpy and DD hates it when I am in the room eating one and she is around because I am so noisy but they are just fabulous so I must enjoy while I can before they disappear from the store again.

Tomorrow is fish day. DD and I had cod earlier this week, it was okay. Tomorrow is salmon on the grill and I'm excited. The rest of the family is having hot dogs (their choice) but I get to indulge in a wonderful bit of salmon. I am a lucky, lucky girl.

the Aldis I have nearby is not as extensive as yours, I am feeling a little envious! I was there yesterday and stocked up on some more mundane items- parmesan cheese wedges, bananas, canned veggies and a bag of potatoes.

Salad for breakfast is an excellent way to start the day, after my next big produce shopping I will give it a try. If you haven't tried it already try making wraps using large lettuce leaves instead of a tortilla; its a little messy with tuna or chicken salad, but with thinly sliced ham or slice chicken or turkey breast, tomato and cucumber slices its a refreshing change and carb free.

    have a great Monday!

I finally started buying organic asparagus this past week and love it raw in my salads. I too eat my salad earlier before noon, then have my main meal around 1:30ish. Love my salads!

So happy you are eating so many fruggies. Keep it up!
