Days Until Summer.

I'm counting down to summer and it's predicted we'll get some snow today. Ugh....

I'm going to keep today's blog short and sweet and share a link with you about what motivates people. Yes, I mean you.

Easier said than done sometimes.

It's actually none of those. And apparently, the money thing only motivates you if you are doing a repetitive, manual type task that does not require a lot of thought.

The answer is three fold, and it will surprise you. Or maybe it won't.

The animated video is 10 minute long, by RS Animation and is called

The short answer to what really motivates us (in case you don't want to watch) is:


Note money is not on the list.

According to the video, the focus on money to the exclusion of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose helps explains unethical behavior behind such corporate scandals such as Enron, AIG, Bayou Hedge Fund, World Com, Adelphia Communications and I could go on and on.

It might also help explain why we all chafe against rigid weight loss programs and why as much as we are in this TOGETHER, we are in this on our own, in so far as we HAVE to find what works for us (AUTONOMY), we have to become proficient in the elements of our health and wellness program (for example, MASTERY of cooking has helped MANY a Sparker get control of their food and their weight) and then PURPOSE.

I think the that last one, PURPOSE is what Sparking is about.

Sharing what we know and learning and cheering on others in their journeys. I know my husband can not for the life of him figure out WHY I spend so much gosh darn time doing this "unpaid internet content provider job."

Because I love it. I love writing. I love researching. I love sharing. I love learning from others.

AUTONOMY = to be physically free to do all that I want to do!
MASTERY = ability to follow the healthy lifestyle journey & maintain health and wellness for life.
PURPOSE = to learn from and share with others what works and why it works. The more we spread love to others the more returns to us and fills our lives.

    I've done a bit of reading to get some clarity about why we do what we do, what creates habits, and how to to change them. There's a lot of conflicting information out there. Several recent studies show that money can motivate some people to exercise, stop smoking, or achieve some other health-related goal.

I'm trying to find more time in my day to pursue some other goals and I'm taking a hard look at the time I spend Sparking....

    Fits right in with Maslow's Hierarchy of needs . . . and does somewhat explain how people can behave unethically. Somewhat.

    Your contributions to SP are so valuable.

My husband wonders about all the time I put in too, both here and at the Paranormalist. I've thought a lot about it myself. I think I get something I need badly out of the instant feedback and the connections. As a novelist, I have to work for months at a time in the dark. Blogging allows me to have interactions that keep me plugging away.

I love the meme that starts "run faster" btw.

Weight loss may seem like a purely physical effort. It's all about eating isn't it? But when I have a lot to lose, I'm going to be in it for a long haul, and I have to work on the cognitive issues behind why I gained the weight in the first place, resolve those issues, and basically change my stinking thinking.
