Counting Calories: How much is the right amount

I don't have to count calories just yet because I am on the Optifast diet right now. Still... I learned that to figure the number of calories you need to support the weight you are at just multiply your weight by ten. So... to maintain 170 lbs. weight, I would need to consume 1,700 calories. This is just a rough estimate and it can be changed to adjust to the amount of activity or exercise you do.
No wonder I gained when I first started at Spark people. I was planning for 2,ooo calories per day. When I get to my goal, I should be consuming 1,400 calories per day. That is not very much. Well, if that's all I end up eating , at least I will save some money on groceries.
