Friday some friends and I headed to Chicago. Trying to stay on track I got up extra early, did 5K on the treadmill before heading out. I had my healthy breakfast, packed a couple protein bars, some fruit & bottled water. I did pretty good the first day - until we got stuck in traffic, ended up arriving at the hotel later than planned, hopped the train downtown & got to our destination 20 minutes before our concert - without dinner. Of course there was a McDonalds on the corner. I just couldn't do it. Inside the building was a Korean fast food counter - so I went there and ordered some chicken & veggie dish with steamed rice. Not sure if it was much better than the burger & fries - but it tasted pretty good.
The concert we saw was Experience Hendrix - which was awesome. I"m sure that wherever Jimmy is, he was smiling on some of the top guitar players wailing away his tunes. If it comes to your town - check it out! A quick train ride, short stop by the casino and back to the hotel.
The next day, I got up early and hit the treadmill at the hotel. Got in a mile and a half, grabbed some eggs for breakfast at the hotel restaurant and hopped the train again for downtown.
We wandered around the green river
and then headed over to the parade route
The crowd was about 10-12 people deep on the parade route so we opted to do something else instead. A couple in our group had not been up to the top of the Willis Tower so that was our destination. The weather was perfect for some great views of the city.
The day was slipping away! We were having so much fun exploring, trying on silly hats
taking pictures of the sites
we lost track of time.
We stopped for some deep dish pizza - and yes, I had two pieces. Bought some Chicago Style popcorn bring home, and then found our way back to the train. I ended the day with over 22,000 steps on my fitbit. Hopefully I walked off at least one piece of pizza!
So a few more things crossed off the bucket list - seeing the green river on St Paddy's day, stepping out on the ledge at Willis Tower and riding the L.
Now back to my routine. Of course it is someone's birthday and there are homemade m&m cookies, cupcakes and turtle cheesecake in our kitchen at work. Gotta be honest, I did taste the cheesecake (one of my favs). Tonight it will be working out at the Y again. Just taking it one day, one step at a time.
No regrets. Sometimes life calls for a splurge. It's what you do in the days that follow that can take you further off course. So even though I can hear Mr. Scale in my head trying to shame me, I am going on a hot date with Mr. Spin bike instead.
You see I finally figured it out - it's not a race to see a number on the scale. I don't need to obsess and weigh myself six times a day to see if I am moving in the right direction. If I am eating right, drinking water and exercising some - I AM moving in the right direction. That is all that matters. Heck with what direction the scale takes - he will eventually get there!
Have a great St Paddy's day! Irish Blessings to you all!
