My Sparkling Goals

Monday, March 17, 2014

I went to the doctor's office a few weeks ago for my normal 2-year check-up, and was disappointed to see that the goals I had set for myself after my previous appointment didn't really seem to come to fruition. I had gained significant weight, my blood pressure was borderline, and my cholesterol was a little high.

Grasping at straws I asked the doctor to check my thyroid--my Mom has issues, and her Mom before her, so I was thinking I could perhaps blame this on something outside my control. I know, I know, you should never wish for health issues, I think it was more wishing for something else to be able to point the finger at instead of my own lack of discipline and dedication to getting well.

Having said all of that, and having been a Spark member for 4 years now, I figure it is about time I started doing something a little different...so I am working on becoming more immersed in the Spark community, hoping it provides me with inspiration and support to really make a difference in my life this time. One of the first ways I am doing that is joining the Dazzling Diamonds Biggest Loser team for their Spring into Action challenge. Already, I can feel my energy shifting as I focus on ways to make better overall decisions for myself and my team. With that being said, here are my goals for this challenge:

I will increase my physical activity to include at least 30 minutes of activity (cardio or strength training) at least 4-5 days each week.

I will decrease my visits to the very convenient and very local "fast food" area near my office and pack my lunch at least 3 times each week.

I will increase my sleep time from 5-6 hours per night to 7-8 hours per night in order to be more rested and ready to face the day.

I will make better food choices and opt for a piece of fruit or veggie, and plan healthier meals for during the week to minimize last minute take out opt-outs.

I will reaffirm with myself on a DAILY basis that I can make these changes and make a difference in how I feel overall.

Looking forward to a dazzling adventure with my fellow teammates, and a healthier me in the process!

I think those are great goals! I really like that you're allowing yourself some flexibility with your days a week - that way if you do it all seven days, bonus, but you won't feel like you've let yourself down if you don't.

Let me tell you: Since I set up a new sleeping routine two weeks ago, I've noticed a significant change in my mood, my eating and my energy. And I'm also up in time to do my morning workouts so I'm not panicking about getting them in after work. Definitely think the sleep goal is a great one.

I hope you don't have any problems with your thyroid and just need extra motivation. Do you track your food? That helps me so much - just being able to see the numbers affirming my good (or bad) work. Keep Dazzling!

Don't feel too bad, I have had similar thoughts with my doctor visits. I get my thyroid checked every time because I do have an enlarged one. I think eventually it will have issues because it runs very heavy in my family. It would be nice to blame the weight gain or the inability to lose on a health issue.

But you have a great attitude for the start of the challenge so I have no doubt that you will meet all of your goals. Keep dazzling Diamond friend!!!

You know how much my exercise streak has motivated me to keep it up. You might want to think about setting something similar on SparkPeople. You can add as Goal. One thing I did before you so wonderfully introduced me to SparkPeople is have a little calendar that I marked with a bingo marker. If I exercised for a minimum of 30 minutes, I would mark that day. I would track next to Saturday how many weeks I had done.

For me, I need a minimum of four days to count toward my exercise streak. I'm at 75 right now. Want to reach 80 so I will surpass my old record of 78.

I can't tell you how often I WOULDN'T have exercised if it wasn't for the streak. When I did a lot of exercise before work and would set alarms on an earlier time, I wanted SO bad to turn off. But there was no way I was going to lose the streak. Vacations were challenging but I worked hard to get my four days in. The week I lost my 78 week was weird emotionally. Something happened that made me lose my focus.

Found streaks don't have their full power until after 25 weeks. That's when the pride really kicks in.

You didn't say whether you did have thyroid issues?

You know emoticon
