I am experimenting with cutting my carbs to an absolute minimum of 15-20 grams/day or as close to that as I can get. The reason is that my blood sugar levels are still not quite out of the pre-diabetic range.
Here are the dietary changes I am making:
I am replacing 3/4 of my plain yogurt with sour cream.
I am reducing my daily berry serving to 2-3 oz. from about 8 oz.
I am staying with very low-carb nuts which eliminates cashews.
I am limiting myself to triple cream cheeses.
I am eliminating things like ketchup and tomato sauce.
I am eating less total, around 1500-1600 calories/day.
I try to spread my calories over 3 meals to avoid over-stretching of the stomach and the additional insulin release that comes from feeling overly full.
If I feel I want a little chocolate treat I will have 1/2 oz. instead of 1 oz. of sugar-free chocolate and I try to have it at most once a week.
I am also doing everything I can to get more sleep by staying off the internet and reducing my stress level when possible. I take melatonin at night to help me sleep better.
I do much more exercise, both strength training and cardio, to improve my insulin-sensitivity.
