Success at eating at ILs

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Ah yes, always the challenge... My in-laws like to eat. They like to eat good food. They like to eat a lot. They like us to eat a lot. They like to feed us a lot. And so meals at their house can often clock in at 1000 calories or more! It has been my challenge for many years to not overeat the delicious fare and everytime I successfully leave without pigging out I really need to give myself a pat on the back. And I did it yesterday. Firstly I only ate half a sandwich and some salad for lunch. Secondly I passed on the cookies. And then I secretly ate my dark chocolate that is my ritual after lunch every day. Yes there was definitely some bitterness coming my way across the table from MIL at not indulging in the overeating. Whatever! Now I just gotta get through a dinner meal at their house without drinking beer. That is truly a challenge. I can only ask to eat lunch with them for so long before dinner will be insisted upon. That is when MIL likes to truly go all out with the 1000 calories meals. Then for dinner I always want a beer and then my inhibitions drop and the next thing I'm eating all their fattening food plus the calories of the beer = waistline disaster! Oh well, celebrate small victories for now!

Good for you! It is wrong that in our society so many celebrations focus on eating too much. I don't worry about over eating now and then, but I try to make it an indulgence that I truly want and enjoy. Your in laws will eventually get of it if they can see that you enjoy visiting, just not over eating. I remember when we used to eat at both my husband's and my family's home for each holiday. Crazy!
