Streak Into Spring Day 15

Saturday, March 15, 2014

It was a crisp 30-something degrees this morning as I met my daughter in the city for the St. Patrick's Day 5K. First run of the season.

I got there way too early hoping to get free on-street parking..... In Chicago! Bah ha! I constantly amuse myself. After winding through several blocks, I finally broke down and parked in the $20 zoo parking lot nearby.

We had a fun warmup with the DJ and then it was time to line up for our first race in 4 months. Mud, puddles, ice patches, a few hard snow mounds, a tightly packed group taking off. That was the first quarter mile.

When the route took us along Lake Michigan, I was mesmerized by the morning sun hitting the blue water. Then the wind. OOOF!! I kept telling myself to keep running because it would be too hard to start running against the wind.

My endurance left a little to be desired but my legs felt strong. Thank you Coach Nicole and! I slowed down to a walk just before the 2 1/2 mile mile mark. I thought 'that's fine, I'll power through to the finish line after I catch my breath'.

Well I didn't exactly power through, but I made it with a time of 34:24, placing 15 out of 50 in my age group. My Irish eyes have been smiling!

So enjoy Peter O'Toole and Ed Sullivan.....

Oh and I finished day 15 of the Spark Streak Into Spring Challenge with Spark Crunchless Ab video.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Sounds like a blast. And regarding that photo you posted, you and your daughter really look a lot alike. It's pretty uncanny.

    Great job!!

That had to be pretty cold along the lake front. I ran a 5K in Arlington Heights yesterday and froze my a** off.

I laughed out loud at your parking in Chicago comment. That IS pretty amusing. Definitely one thing I DON'T miss about living in the city.

That is excellent..15th out of 50. What a great run!

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Your Irish ancestors would be happy for you.

My son lives in Evanston and he does not like that wind.

    Loved the video!

My first 5K was the morning after a nor'easter blew through. The race was almost called because it was still snowing at 5 in the morning. Turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny day but it was COLD and the wind was brutal along the Cape Ann coastline. My time was 34:34.

Awesome run. Wind doesn't sound like much fun, especially right off the water. This is only the start. Sunrise sounds lovely. Enjoy the rest of your weekend

Awesome job Kellie, bravo for enduring that cold and wind - the wind just takes it right out of me and I am impressed you pushed on through. Is Lake Michigan frozen where you are?

Woohooh, 15 out of 50, Well done ! I must admit that although I love running, I really struggle to do it when the temperatures are low, so a big bravo to you !
