I'm a PF Chang's 1/2 Marathoner

Friday, March 14, 2014

So the year before last I thought it would be awesome to do a half marathon, and I started to train but then for financial reasons, I just could not make it work. So, this year when the time rolled around to start training, I was determined to do it, and I made it happen!

First, I am not a runner, so if you think you have to run to be a marathoner, you don't! It is a race, so you do have to finish in a set time period, for PF Chang's you have to finish in 4 hours. When I set out training my goal was to finish in the 4 hours, period, since I had no personal best for comparison and I had to start somewhere. I did research the year before and found a training plan that worked for me. If you were already comfortable walking 10-15 miles per week then the training plan stated you only needed about 3 months to train, so I started at the end of September because the marathon is in January. I always enlisted a friend to train with me, even though she did not do the marathon with me, it was great for accountability. I picked Saturday's to to my long training walks. I had to make adjustments for the holidays and such, but it was a great way to stay focused for me because I always have a tough time exercising in the winter months, especially around the holidays. My longest training walk was 11 miles, which I did 2 weeks before the actual marathon. I got a lot of inspiration and guidance from others who had done marathons here on Spark, that helped me with how to fuel and what to wear. Lots of good information from your fellow Sparkers, which made me believe I could do it too!!

I was nervous and excited the day of but more proud of myself for seeing it through and doing it! It was a lot of time and dedication but so worth it!!

I loved this shot I took while waiting to start....

Here I am in my corral....

People getting ready...bathroom before hand was key, there were always lines on the course!!

This was around mile 10, it was great to see the city on the streets...

Almost done...that last mile was tough....

My reward....done in 3:17:59

I can't wait to do it again!!

I'm so HAPPY for you!!!! What an amazing goal you accomplished. You look amazing and so happy. I been wanting to walk a half but just never took the time. You give me renewed inspiration.

What program did you use? I've looked at a couple but never picked one. I usually walk 3 - 4 miles a day during the week but slack on the weekends. Send me a note ...

YOU ARE ALL KINDS OF AWESOME!!!!!
