Day 897... Doh!

Sunday, March 09, 2014

So, here is some advice I need to remember... don't try and cook while your fingers are numb. You increase the chances of doing something stupid. My fingers were completely numb after walking outside in the cold all afternoon, when I decided to start cooking dinner. No problem, right? Not! I didn't notice how hot the pan was when I grabbed it until later when the burn blisters popped up. Now my fingers hurt. At least it wasn't the previously injured hand. That would have been adding insult to injury.

On a happier note, I walked Cooper for a total of over 3 hours today, walked 3 hours without him, plus did a little yoga and ST. I got a later start than usual due to the time change, so I have pretty much been moving since I got up. I sat down to eat my meals, but that was about all the sitting I have done today. My feet are a bit tired. (Understatement!) While it was quite cold out for all that walking the sun did make the occasional appearance which brightened my mood.

I figured out something the other day at work. A patient was dragged in by his grandaughter (he didn't want to make a fuss, you know). His blood sugars on his home gkucometer was reading "HI" - which is not a friendly greeting. I did a finger stick, but his finger tips were so cold and hard, I had trouble getting the blood drop out, and my number read "LO". Hmmm - gave him a warmed IV bag to hold, his fingers warmed & softened, & got the "HI" reading. Whipped him back to a room in the ER. So, trick for the day for diabetics - gently warm your fingers before testing your blood (don't grab hot handles, tho - owie, Chandra)

As always, you impress me with your walking.

I'm now up to 1.5 miles...nothing compared to you, but you remind me to move even when I don't feel like it!
