healthy choices instead of worrying about # on the scale

My weight fluctuates a LOT. I am up over 5 pounds this morning (still down 11 this year) I am posting here to try and prevent the self-sabotage I usually have when I see my weight up. Yesterday I bought size 18 pants that fit because my size 24 was just about falling off. I can see in my photo I am losing weight. Here is what happened: After a good week of healthful eating and exercising I ate a chicken & cheese sandwich Wednesday (I am Vegan normally & LOW salt). Then Thursday I had to drive 2 hours round trip to an important meeting where I had to sit still for 8 hours, with only a 45 minute break, in the middle to eat – I was not anticipating this and my “healthiest” lunch option was a premade ham & cheese sandwich (in a shop full of pastries & no other shops in sight). I asked, this was the only non-pastry available and there was not a fruit or veggie in sight. Driving there and back added up to 2 hours when all was said and done. Since the meeting ran so long it was a rush to pick up my kids and get them home for a very late dinner. My old habits kicked in and I got everyone a (fast food) hamburger… So I could have made better choices, but it is a new day and I am trying to just not worry about the # on the scale and make healthy choices for today. Wish me luck.

You have the right attitude! You recognize a habit you don't want to rely on, but you aren't beating yourself up over it either! Every now and then life happens, and a fast food burger once in a while isn't the end of the earth, so long as we remember that it's only once in a while!

Keep up the great work! You are looking fantastic, and I bet you are feeling better too! emoticon

Life happens and you are in situation where you have no healthy choices. It is just stand back take a long look and move forward. You have done a great job so far and you will continue to do so

It's that the way it goes. When we feel rushed and anxious it is so easy to slip back into those bad habits. Deep breath and start anew, work at doing better. emoticon

You look fabulous! I have done this before and I notice that the more rushed I am the less likely I am to make good choices...I am going to try to not beat myself up when I have days like that....When I beat myself up I tend to start down a road of bad choices....You are doing super though!! Keep up the good work!

Sabotage reeks havoc when your schedule is busy; and you are the primary transport, cook, etc. in the family. I sympathize with you completely. Often times, we just grab the quickest thing because of our energy and stress levels.

I have made efforts to cook more than one meal on Sunday so that I am not scrambling if I run late - or if there is monkey wrench thrown into the mix.

I agree. You are doing great and think your attitude is great too. I've sabotaged myself many times with the number on the scale and now I'm all about making small changes and turning them into healthy habits realizing that there will be setbacks and I won't do things perfectly. I'm trying for consistency.

You are doing so well!! The pictures tell the whole story. Don't let one little weight fluctuation due to a combination of out of the ordinary circumstances bring you down. Back with your healthy habits (and maybe a little extra water to eliminate sodium??) and you should be fine. emoticon

The great news is that you know PRECISELY why you gained weight, that it was a set of circumstances that we all encounter, and since it is OBVIOUS from the difference in the two pictures-wow, you have really made a lot of progress-that all you have to do is return today to the same method of eating that has gotten you such success already. So just note that the program works because as soon as you deviated, you got immediate weight gain, and note you are only one additional day removed from your goals!

We are always so hard on ourselves when we have a bad day. I am guilty of this. If I slip up and have something I know I shouldn't, I feel "Oh well, I might as well have this now since the whole day is ruined." That is such a bad way of thinking. We would never tell our kids, "You got an F on this test so don't bother doing your homework." No, we tell them to do better the next day. We expect them to do that and yet sometimes we just give up.

When you have a bad day just remember tomorrow is another day to get it right and the more right days the better. We all have bad days. Weight loss is hard, if it wasn't nobody would be overweight. Why is it so easy for us to give up on ourselves when we expect so much from others?

You can do it!

You are so smart to keep your "cool" and carry on. You are so aware of what you want to be doing. Some days it's tricky to get all that done.

Congrats especially for avoiding pastries while buying the most healthy thing.

I too begin to beat myself but your approach of posting a visual that would speak louder than words is fantastic. Honestly wow good job.
