Lenten Self-Denial

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

I have made the decision to give up COOKIES for Lent. Sounds silly, I know... but Lent is about self-denial, repentance, and reflection. It doesn't make sense for me to give up something meaningless to me like gum, candy, or alcohol. None of them have a hold on me. Cookies are truly my weakness.

Currently there are three unopened boxes of Girl Scout cookies in the pantry. Luckily, one is a box of Samoas, the only cookie I don't like, so no problem there. Unfortunately the others are Thin Mints (heaven help me!) and Lemon cookies. Oh the temptation!

So everyone, enjoy Mardi Gras... but not too much! Lent begins tomorrow.

thanks for the reminder. I will be following a daily reflection booklet, filling the "rice bowl" for church missions and giving up nighttime secular shows. and evening cocktail

I am currently talking to God about giving up Starbucks for Lent. It's not just about the coffee, though. I live alone and so my routine trips to Starbucks allow me a little social interaction. Suppose I could get that through church activities, though. Hmmm. Inspiration: I will cut back from the daily trip to no more than twice a week. Still a significant sacrifice, but not setting myself up for failure.

Blessings to us all...

This Lent is going to be difficult for me as I am having the sleeve gastrectomy on Thursday. So I won't be eating anything with sugar for a very long time. Also, none of the usual vice foods. So in addition to helping more at church and at our food pantry, I am going to be doing random acts of kindness, hopefully everyday! I don't think Lent is all about giving up, as much as doing right! But no fish fries this Lent! I don't know how I will survive! Hopefully, God will help me through it!

Good for you! I've deferred buying them as yet. I've been toying with the thought of giving up unhealthy eating for Lent with the hopes that it will have stuck as a habit by then. Best wishes for the Lenten season!
