Can't Do Everything

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

You truly can't do everything. You have to pick and choose. This last weekend I did the Disney Princess Half Marathon. It was a great experience and I don't regret my choice. BUT I missed the opening ceremonies of the Polk Senior Games. And hubby gave up one event (Senior Smarts) that he would have participated in.

Right now hubby is competing in checkers. Hope he does well. He has chess, Sudoku, and bag toss coming up; I have 5K run, 5K walk, 900 meter walk, and bag toss coming up. A lot of our dancing friends were at the opening and will be at the dozen or more dancing competitions. We are beginners and not competing, but may get to go watch some. Hope so.

And there were many other events this week end, too. Although 9 of us from my running group participated in the Princess HM, 29 people ran in Gasparilla distance events. I think they had a 5K, 8K, 10K, 15K, HM, and maybe a marathon, too. At least there were a whole bunch of events to choose from and some people did multiple races. And 2 people went from our group to Jacksonville to run in the Breast Cancer Half Marathon. Luckily they got to finish. Many of the BC marathon runners were pulled off the course due to lightning. I know that had to be disappointing for those forced to quit after training for months.

Although I didn't get a picture of me at the Princess HM, I've been asked to don my Princess shirt, SparkSkirt, and medal and get one snapped because our Galloway director is making a princess picture collage. OK. I'll do it. I suspect part of the reason I did not insist on pictures was because my nose was all red, I felt kind of bloated, and really didn't feel that great. I didn't even tuck my shirt in and did not wear all the fairy godmother costume I had planned on wearing. I will definitely be glad when this cold is gone. I have trouble sleeping well when my nose is congested. Luckily, running seems to clear my nose about better than anything!! I may have to lower my expectations for my Senior Games 5K performance, but definitely will still give it my best! Any day I can run is a great day, even though I can't run every race!!

Sometimes it is so hard to choose when there are lots of activities at conflicting times. You chose well, my friend. Although your HM didn't yield a PR for you, you had a wonderful Disney experience. I'm so sorry that your cold got in the way of having more fun! Enjoy the parts of the Senior Games that you can participate in this year. For those that you missed, there is always next year!

Yes, indeed, one has to pick and choose... sorry you weren't at the top of your "dress as fairy godmother" form... but you picked a fine event. emoticon

How lucky you are to have senior games in your area. Of course, Florida has a LOT of seniors, doesn't it.

We had senior Olympics when we lived in Northern VA, and my Dad competed in the 90s. I wasn't old enough yet, but we used to plan that I would join him when I turned 55 and he would have been 85. Unfortunately, he died at age 80 which made the yearly event sad for me and I never participated.

Now I would love to participate and we don't have any opportunities like that around here.

Enjoy the experience with DH and friends.

Good luck at the senior games! They seem to have a variety of games to participate in. Our games here are pretty basic, nothing like Sudoku or checkers. Bridge, bowling, etc.
Feel better soon!

Marsha, if you want challenge, check out the variations for Gasparilla next year. The prices are better, the courses are PR rich, and you're supporting a great local organization!
