Day 9... If it burns, does that mean it's working?

Sunday, February 23, 2014

Ah, exercise. The much dreaded and talked about subject. I don't have the greatest relationship with exercise. In simple words, I hate it. 5 years ago when I set out to lose weight, I started going walking every day. It was during the summer, so I would walk 20 minutes to camp instead of getting a ride. Then I started walking about an hour every night, at a fast pace. It definitely helped with my weight loss.

This time around, I am busy. I work a full 9-5 day, then I go to class at night from 6:30-9:00 and by the time I get home I am too tired to go out walking.

I do walk to work every day, 25 minutes there and back for a total of about 50 minutes. Then I walk 10 minutes to the subway, and from the subway to class about 7 minutes, and then again back home. I count it at around 80 minutes of walking every day. And I walk fast. All my friends tell me, slow down, what's the rush. I guess I am a New Yorker at heart, cuz my motto is 'move it or lose it'. I hate when people are taking up the sidewalk walking really slow and I just want to get around them so I can speed up. I calculated that I walk about 3.3 mph. I figured that because one year on Labor Day (which is a big deal in New York and most of the major streets are blocked off for the West Indie day parade), I was waiting for a bus that never came, so I ended up walking to my destination which according to Google maps is 3.3 miles, and it took me around 45 minutes.

So yes, I do get walking in every day. I don't go anywhere near a gym. My only experience with a work-out DVD is last summer when I decided to try Jillian Michael's 30 minute work out, and 10 minutes in I was on the floor sweating screaming "no Jillian, no more!".

I know there are benefits to working out together with eating healthy. I just thought that I could get away without it. But now I am reconsidering.

I came across this blog entitled '100 reasons to exercise'
ual.asp?blog_id=5631221 It does make some valid points.

And then I came across the plank challenge:
ual.asp?blog_id=5555726 and decided to give it a try.

Yesterday I could barely do 10 seconds before collapsing. Today I woke up wondering why my stomach muscles are so sore before remembering. Today I did 20 second planks, a few times throughout the day. Each time it is easier to hold the position. Also, I am enjoying the burning feeling because I know it is working. And even though I don't like the IDEA of exercising, I would love to look toned. Without the effort of course :) Which is impossible.

So I am planing to incorporate some form of exercise into my daily routine. Possibly the Jillian Michael's workout again, or maybe try the Insanity workout. I also want to buy a jump rope and some weights to spice things up.

Please share any workout ideas or tips. Also, why do you work out, and what do you feel are the benefits?

In other news, today I weighed in at 189.4 :) :) :) So ya, I'm back to weighing myself every day, and I'm happy I did so cuz I wanted to see the moment I got into the 180's. It was a smiling moment, and the feeling of 'Haha, I knew I could do it'.

Thanks for all your support emoticon

I have heard that the best exercise is the one you do. Try anything that sounds like you would like to try. I am rewarding myself with fabulous chocolate after exercise in an effort to associate the exercise with the enjoyment I get out of chocolate. (Secretly, I just want chocolate, but I will let you know if it works.)

    Much success to you!
