Three Deaths

Thursday, February 20, 2014

"There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time." from SUM by David Eagleman.

I wonder if this is why I occasionally talk about, and by name, my great-grandparents. And sometimes I go back even further. It's partly because I had some geneaologists in my family but also partly because I seem to be a person who is determined to keep the past alive in some sort of meaningful way.

My father told me what Madeit's philosophy course said, that you live until the last person who remembers you dies. I keep my father alive for my grandchildren by passing on his quotes and wisdom.

What a fascinating quote, and way of looking at the passage of time. It sometimes boggles my mind, to think of how many humans (and other creatures) have passed through this world. I love to wander through graveyards. Perhaps the next time I do, I will say some of the names out loud, so that they can avoid that third death.

I never thought about it that way. I can't remember anyone passed my great grandmas. They were both great ladies, I had to say that, now! :)
Thank you for sharing.

    Death - it's inevitable.

Perhaps write a best-selling book, like Harry Potter - then the 3rd death won't happen for a VERY long time. ;-)

I say let's avert at least the first death for as long as possible!

I took a Philosophy of African Religions course once and they had the same approach - that when the last person who remembers you dies, you also die. Interesting quote.

It isn't very long before no one is left who actually knew you!
