Falling down and other news!

Not the metaphorical falling...the physical falling.
I fell again this morning. My brother in law dropped me off at the store where I catch the bus to go to work. I got there before the store opened and was walking down to the far door (they only have one door open until like 8am) and slid on the ice. We got another 6 inches of snow yesterday but the temps are on the rise this week....I think it got to 40 today.
Anyways, with the temps up a little bit, everything is starting to melt and is wet so I couldn't tell that there was a slick of ice on the sidewalk.
I wasn't walking too fast so it wasn't too bad...I banged my left knee (it is always the arthritic left one!) I got up, walked closer to the building so I could steady myself if I slid again and walked even slower to the door and waited on them to open. As soon as they opened I let one of the employees know that there was ice on their sidewalk.

I told her that the sidewalk was coated with ice and they might want to put out some salt...I got a very rude "WE JUST OPENED!" from the lady that I told....sad part is that since Jewel is a smaller store, there are a lot of older people that shop there. I was pretty taken aback with her attitude and the more I thought about it, I went from "taken aback" to "P.O.'d" and sent an email to the corporate office about it after I got home.

I went on my merry way to work, walked from the bus to work, from work back to the bus, and then 1.5 miles home from the stop. The warmer temp is very nice although my feet and legs were pretty wet by the time I got home.

I made my 10k step goal today, although now that I am home and have my feet up, I am really feeling it in my knee and my lower back. I imagine that I will be sore for a day or two (glad I am off work for a few days while they are remodeling), but am planning on getting my bike out of the shed before Friday. With warmer weather on the way, I will be biking the 2 miles to the library and locking up my bike there, catching the bus to work, and then biking home after work...so I need to see how long it will take me to make the ride so I can time it for the bus schedule.
I am hoping to be able to just ride my bike all the way to work before fall of this year. It is 10 miles which I think I could do, but am not to sure about riding 10 miles, then being on my feet for several hours and then a 10 mile ride home. It is just something I will have to work towards.


Work is going really good. I got off to a bumpy start, mostly due to my nerves, but am getting much more comfortable there now. We are closed for 4 days this week for a remodel and we are all excited for our new look!
I have figured out that I get closer to my 10k step goal on days that we aren't so busy. When we are busier, I have to stand behind my counter more. On slower days, I can walk around and I also get to play with the kids a bit.
Out of the 18 days that I have had my tracker, I made my goal 5 days and I was only short a couple hundred steps for 2 other days. Other than that, on my days off, I have been averaging around 5k steps just around the house. I have been trying to get a little quiet time after work most days...when I am in a building with several hundred people for hours on end....I NEED some peace and quiet for just a little bit to unwind. Saturday was so busy, we had to start turning people away at the door because our building was full to legal capacity. The constant assault of noise is something that I am still trying to get used to.


I am not too happy with my clothes right now, I cannot decide if they are getting any looser or not! My work pants are baggy in the crotch and butt, which prompted me to finally find a belt to wear, but today (because I am doing laundry and have nothing else clean), I put on my old yoga pants that seemed just as tight if not tighter than they were before I started to exercise a year and a half ago!


When I decided to give myself a break from the scale, I got all my new 'beginning' measurements at the end of January. I will weigh and measure myself again at the end of the month and will see what is what. I also (finally) found a doctor here that will take medicaid insurance and both my beau and myself have an appointment on Thursday.

I have been making a bunch of different recipes for dinner and working on controlling my portions and have been doing pretty well I think. I will find out the next time I weigh in.

    Lucky you didn't do yourself a serious injury when you fell. Glad to see the bike is coming out again. I keep losing and gaining the same 3 lb but I live in hope that soon, very soon, I will get going again and this will include getting to 10,000 steps. Good news about the looser fitting clothes.

    Be careful! Nothing worse than falling when you're trying to do everything right. Man, those bruises hurt!

Congrats on making your step goal. That's a good feeling!

    Oh bother, a fall!
Ice/water/snow this last days .... just dangerous.

Too bad that store doesn't have someone to clean the walks off before it opens.

I worked at a Mom and Pop dime store and we had to go in to do that. Most would never go in early to shovel like I did. I was like you, thinking of the customers safety.

At least you have a few days to rest the knee/back. And a remodeled place to go back to ... you certainly get a good amount of walking in!

Though we have a warm up, cold is coming back in a week. I wanted Feb. to go out like a lamb, I really did. Especially for you that have to do all this walking.
