Deciding Makes the Difference (2014 - Blog #48)

"The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are."
Author Unknown

In my life, I have not had to "diet" very often. I can remember three times. The first time was when I was 18 after living in Latin America for a year and I gained about 10-15 pounds. I "did" my first diet ever. I had no idea what I was doing and was not successful until I decided to stop dieting and start being more judicious about my food intake. Because i was naturally always moving around, i was lucky to not have to worry too much about exercise.

The second time was a few years ago (about 30 years later) -when I started with Spark. I had lost focus, was in a job that had horrendous hours and was so far away from anything healthy that my poor habits resulted in getting overweight this time by about 30 pounds. My success was a result of deciding to not to "diet" but to shift my thinking and actions. I decided to do a triathlon. I decided to lose weight. I decided to be judicious again about intake. I decided to blog. I decided that enough was enough.

And now my third time. Not my proudest moment simply because in my family we run small. We have fairly good metabolisms. But I had lost my focus again. Fortunately I had not lost my love for my running, walking, biking and swimming, but I had lost my focus on smart eating. And so I decided that enough was enough.

Wishing never gets me anywhere unless my next thought is how I will turn a wish into a reality. The moment I decide I get stubborn. And when I get stubborn about a goal, I take action and I focus. That's good. I can achieve what I decide I will achieve.

Yup.. DECIDING makes all the difference!

Have a decision-filled week folks. emoticon

I can relate - although I'm content with 5 lbs either way, I'm @ the high, clothing tight end and the earlier focus and commitment have gone by the wayside. Here's to re-focusing on health and moving as the weather loosens its grip!

OH love the purple on your mountain and I can decide and decide till the cows come home, but my issue is consistency and persistence. Just not sticking to anything again, and then I start thinking who was I kidding when I said this was going to be my year, sure like I said for all the 30 years prior............... some kind of mental mind change has to come about...........

Life is made up of decisions. I was talking with a coach on the phone yesterday and we were chatting over the turnaround since our last call six weeks ago... and the long and little of it... it can be like a switch... doesn't take long to turn around once you DECIDE to do so.

I simply love the first quote in your blog. That is sooo true.

Then after you decide to get somewhere, you must make a change. After all, the definition of "stupid" is to do the same thing over and over and expect different results (author unknown). So you have to make a change and develop a plan that requires doing something different than you are already doing. Making a change moves you out of your comfort zone (this is challenging); but if you have the plan and stick to it, you will reach your destination.

Best wishes!
