Hungry

Friday, February 14, 2014

Today the Rhodiola started working, in that I went to the gym this morning and did a full strength-training-plus-cardio workout, AND the sky outside clouded over and everything turned gray halfway through the day... but I did not take a nap.

This is epic. I. Did not. Take. A nap.

At all.

Nope. None. Nada.

Whew!

Instead of feeling an overwhelming tiredness and compulsion to sleep, what I felt was a minor ebb in energy -- by which I mean it was noticeable, and it made me think about maybe resting for a bit, but I was able to defer it and then forget about it (kind of like cravings for certain foods, I guess; if you can distract yourself just long enough to get through it, it then disappears of its own accord).

There is one crazy side effect to this, however.

I suppose I am going to have to learn new eating habits again, because eating my usual way (small meals and snacks, favouring protein and limiting starches and grains) resulted in my being STARVING HUNGRY regular as clockwork every 2 hours. I mean, not just a slight feeling of "I've got some room for food, maybe a little snack would be good" but full on "OMG, it's been hours since I last ate and my stomach is empty, so I need food NOW!"

By the time dinner came around, I was about done with feeling that way. I had a social event this evening, and I didn't want to be hungry in the middle of it, so I loaded up my plate with homemade stew and mashed turnips and ate until my stomach had no more capacity to receive food.

Um, this was maybe not the best plan, especially the mashed turnips part.

They tasted really good (surprisingly sweet) but I don't digest them well.

Still, this time I wasn't hungry two hours later, so there's that.

Like I said, I'm going to have to figure out a new eating plan that doesn't leave me so hungry (or bloated) all the time.

I have been following ETL for a few weeks now. Recently I've added in a small amount of bread even though it is forbidden on ETL because I was having a hard time getting in enough calories. Gobs of salad, veggies, beans, etc. And I love this way of eating! Gave up cheese, even my daily dose of fish in favor of the veggie life. I do still have fish on Sunday though because that is our big family meal day and I needed to eat something with the rest of the crew.

Same thing here. I have found that during the day I can limit my caloric intake but by dinnertime I am sooooo hungry! I end up with most of my calorie intake in the last meal of the day. I still stay withing my calorie range but is it a good or bad thing to eat so many caloried at the end of the day?

Well what a success that you went the entire day without taking a nap or needing a nap. As for the hunger, here's a story for you. When I left home to go to college, I had a roommate who had lost about 75 pounds over the summer. You have to remember, this was back in the late 1960's. She did it by eating canned tuna fish and sleeping the rest of the time - all day, all night. She said that sleeping kept her from feeling hungry. The interesting part for you is that after a couple weeks' adjustment to eating regular food and NOT sleeping all the time, she sort of evened out. She wasn't tired or hungry. And she didn't regain, which to me was the amazing thing.

Anyway, my story for you today for what it's worth... Give it a couple of weeks. Eat more fiber? I imagine that's what those mashed turnips did for you...

It does get tricky to manage the intake. I agree. Need some good intake for energy, but too much and I feel sluggish and bloated. I am working on the same thing.
