A Bit of A Dilemma

Thursday, February 13, 2014

I'll admit I don't read my blogs one they are published. Well at least not to very often. Rest assured I read your insights and responses to my blogs and when I have some time I even respond, which btw, I feel guilty about not doing on a regular basis. I mean what if you hate me?That's not the point today. (Not sure how I ended up in that ditch.)

I read my last blog posting earlier this morning and to my surprise I noticed there was a hyperlink inserted by the word "health" Clicking on it a box popped open advertising "low cost health insurance." My brow furrowed a bit. That hyperlink implies I endorse that company and its product. I do not. I don't make it a practice or a habit of endorsing any product or company. I didn't even know it was there.

I got a bit angry. A few months ago I received a very nice but firm Spark Mail from the powers that be reminding me I couldn't advertise here. It was a innocent error on my part. I talked about a program I'd offered. I edited the blog and issued a statement the next day apologizing. The error wasn't intentional and all that good stuff. I agree with Sparks policy. I'm here to learn and grow and get healthy. I'm not here to wade through infomercials. So, my blood pressure began to rise when I saw they were allowing people to use me, my blogs and my Spark presence to advertise products I knew nor cared anything about. I understand that it's difficult to maintain this sight for free. And I accept all the advertising on the side bars as a necessary evil.

While I'm at it I'd like to clear something up with the person who suggested the reason I get adds for 20 something year old women is because I surf those sights. Well, and ya know who ya are, I did some research into that phenomenon because I do have a lot of integrity and I don't go trolling for women of any age. I listen to Pandora Radio when I'm working and writing. I use the free version and my research took me from link, to link, to link to Pandora, whose free wall paper advertises women in my area that want me. Can you say "cookie." Lemme repeat "cookie" not "creeper."

Gosh I'm in a mood today.

But seriously, that add placed without my permission or even my knowledge set me off. Yeah, it's their right, blah, blah, blah, but it's my obligation to inform you that I don't endorse any of those things and if you click on them or buy them or whatever you do so at your own peril.

My alternative would be to stop writing blogs but I enjoy writing too much and I love you. There, I don't feel better, but at least you know and hopefully understand

I've never seen any hyper links with a blog, other than what the person intends as in "Hey, check out the link to this video or article"

So I'm really confused. Went back to your old blogs and found nothing within the text that indicated a errant hyper link near any words.

I really hope that this is not the case!

That said, I'm sure anything we publish here belongs to Spark, same as Facebook or most other sites.

Have a great day and keep ...

I noticed this several months ago when I would reply to a team thread. At first I thought I was somehow inserting hyperlinks. Seems wrong that they can take our words and do what they want with them.

And yes, you were in a mood this particular morning. I love your moods!

I never look at ads- anyway I agree with you and to being careful about what it is being advertised here.
Anyway, I ' d be suffering too much if I could not read your blogs, even if you are free to take your decisions.
BTW I am now in pause due to injury and I've thought a lot about what you did when you had to stop.....maybe I'll change my training but I won't change my mind. emoticon "

Don't stop blogging! And sometimes the "links" that show up are things that are controlled by one's browser settings... and yes, Coo-kies!

But I get WAY too much from your musings to ever want you to "go away"... we are kindred spirits... and I'm a big girl... I know you're not pushing product out there, John!

Feel better. Feel appreciated. Because you are! emoticon

I hope you feel better now that you've gotten this off your chest. And I don't read previous blogs either. So keep on blogging -

I'm not thrilled about the ads either. Some of them are quite intrusive. Occasionally I click on something by accident and end up pestered to death. At some point people will leave the site rather than stay and be subjected to this.

Keep the blogs coming John! I agree that if individuals aren't allowed to advertise Spark shouldn't be allowed to use what we write to advertise either. It must be our age because I was highly annoyed with the change in the friend feed. The writing is too tiny and too close together. It's hard to sort things out IMHO.

John, the irony is what is good for the goose is not good for the gander in this situation and Spark SHOULD NOT under any circumstance add links in your PERSONAL blog post - I find that infuriating and worth an email to Spark Guy. I get the ads too and I am glad the site is free, but I think it would be a fair statement that many people on Sparkpeople would be willing to pay for an ad free site. it can get are in the right to be upset about this....

I enjoy your blogs John and look for them every day. Motivational and insightful. I had one add popping up in the middle of everything I tried to do including exercise videos. I complained in my daily motivation block and had no more trouble. I guess they have permission to advertise and take advantage of where until they are brought up short by sparkpeople. I have heard some complain of the same interruption though. I agree that their adds should be on the side but leave the blogs and our exercises alone. emoticon

Some of those things are very annoying... but the people who know you don't think those things....... and I think that posting your disclamer reinforces this ... so yea you!

In my way of thinking they can put any ads they want on their sights but your blog or anybody's blog is not fair game! That REALLY disappoints me in them. What an invasion of your space, I don't care that it is free, they get a LOT with it being free because of the numbers of people on it and especially their buying things! It seems there rules are not for themselves!

emoticon , DON'T QUIT writing, we would miss you too much, especially all of the lessons you share with us.
