Let's not start over...Let's keep going!!

Monday, February 10, 2014

So, as the headline says, I don’t want to start over when I fall off the wagon. Have we ever even noticed that makes no sense? People say, “If you fall off the horse, get back up and start over.” NO! I’m going to get back on and KEEP GOING! I don’t have to go back to the starting point!
We tell each other all the time in life and especially here on Spark People. “It’s okay that you went on a junk food binge yesterday….” Or “It’s alright you haven’t been exercising lately….” Followed by “….just start all over today and do the best you can,” or something along those lines.

Yes, it is okay that we slip up. It’s going to happen! We are human after all. I cannot stress how incredibly important it has been for me to not beat myself up over the downfalls. I would have given up shortly after I started had I expected overnight perfection.

When I do slip up, I don’t start that day over as day 1. I CONTINUE on my path from the point I left off! If every week we are starting at Day 1, (and let’s face it, that’s how often we screw up at first,) how long will it take before we feel we are getting absolutely nowhere and give up?

Think of it this way….
You are on the horse. You have to travel 100 miles. After a mile, you fall off and hop back up on the horse…do you turn around and go home? Or do you pride yourself in making it a mile and see just how far you can get!? I don’t know about you, but I choose the latter! And hell, once you get to say, 20 miles, if you fall off that horse, how could you even THINK about going backwards! Look how far you’ve made it! Pride yourself on 20 miles and keep on keeping on!!

emoticon Most definitely; get back up and keep it moving! If I went back, I may not want to go "out" again! Point well made as we cannot change the past. Going back doesn't change what's already done! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I agree. Its something that happens to my physical posture when I think of starting over again. But when I think of simply continuing my mood as well as my posture tstraghtens up. Its as though my language or thoughts manifest physically as well as mentally. So reminding myself that its not starting over but continuing takes a conscious effort.

    Great blog!

I concur - it is not starting over after a stumble, it's continuing on.

Just reminded myself of a part of a song out of 'Muppets Take Manhattan" - "We're not starting over, we're just moving on". It's from the song "Together Again". Yeah - I'm that dork.
